Germany 10/7/13 onwards for 7-10 days
Hi, I'm planning on seeing a lot more of Germany than I normally do (Autobahns...)
I'll be leaving Brussels on the morning of the 10th and heading into Germany. I have no real plan other than- I want to ride some scenic routes, and the odd city centre (Berlin springs to mind) generally just chill out and enjoy the ride. I'll do a bit of touristy stuff as and when the need arises and that will include taking in some old Soviet sites that are dotted around the country! I'm planning on staying in Pensions/cheapish hotels. There won't be any camping getting done by me..... The average day on the bike will be 200/250 relaxing miles then find somewhere to stay for the night. Evenings will be the traditional beer & food followed by some people watching ;-) I'm too old for partying nowadays! This is a solo run for me so I'd love some company if anyone fancies joining me, otherwise recommendation of good roads, places to stay and things to see/do are also very welcome. More or less in line from Brussels to Berlin is a beautiful piece of landscape: Head for Bonn and then on minor roads to Siegen and further to Kassel. Carry on on secondary roads through the Harz NP to Goslar, an old town where in ancient times Emperors were crowned. Don't miss the town of Quedlinburg.
North of Berlin is a kind of "Lake District" called Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, or in german slang: "Meck-Pomm". Maybe then further north to the coast, e.g. to the island of Ruegen. That would be the northern parts of Germany. Very interesting are also the south-eastern parts alog the Elbe river. There are the pretty towns of Dresden, Bautzen, Goerlitz.... All ex-GDR country. Prices for rooms and food is fairly cheap there. Enjoy! Hans |

the Elbe river and any other river in eastern Germany are not a particularly good place to travel to in a few weeks. Right now they have severe flooding and billions of damages coming up. There are few, if any, Soviet remnants in Eastern Europe (unless you find some run-down barracks somewhere). If you want to see intercontinental missile silos etc. you need to travel to the Ukraine. Whilst Berlin is a great city, the way east between Hannover and Berlin is boring like hell. I have made a kml file on Google maps, showing you my idea of a scenic route through the southern part of Germany, including the river Mosel and the ancient Roman city Trier, the southern Palatina area (Pfalz) with beautiful scenery and huge woodlands, a tour down to the Black Forest (passing Touratech in Niedereschach), going east to the Bodensee and from there to Munich, then north to Ingolstadt (Audi museum), Nuremberg (ancient beautiful city), up the Rhoen area and from there westbound to the Cologne and Aachen area. You should be able to open the kml file, which is in my public dropbox file, with any navigation program as well as with Google Earth. We won´t be able to join you as we will leave for a three week´s tour of Britain around that time :scooter: To be more clear, it´s just a rough scetch and rural backroads are recommended all the way through. Should you be interested in a particular part of that scetch feel free to let me know and I´ll be happy to provide a more detailed route. Cologne
I visited Cologne a few years back with the wife and kids, great city. Did the river trip which was ok, but the highlight was cable car over the river. Just as we crossed the bank on the other side it went over a nudist club/camp! Kids thought it was hilarious :D
Anyway it is a great place to visit thoroughly recommend it. |

Keks, the kml file is much appreciated, it's given me some pointers so i can start planning my routes in more detail, there's nothing like local knowledge.
