From Mongolia through China to Laos

We are planning to cross China sometime in Oktober this year. Will be in Mongolia in September. Could meet up there. We are currently in contact with different travel operators to find the cheapest way for a guide and thought there might be more people willing to share the cost?!
We are a German/English couple in their best years ;-) (she 47, he 60 ) on tour with a BMW r 100 GS and sidecar. Open minded fun loving and easy going.

addendum:
We now have an offer of the Chinese Travel Agency Navo. If we can find a car driver who has a seat for the guide the cost would be 2203 € PP. This excludes accommodation and meals for oneself and costs incurred in China (entrance fees, Maud, petrol .....) plus possibly accommodation and meals for the guide.
The price includes all permits, Chinese driving license, license plate, vehicle insurance, Guide, customs declarations at entry and exit, Navo's costs
There has to be payed a vehicle security deposit on entry, which is refundable upon departure.
Itinerary: entry Erenhot (Mongolian border), Beijing, Datong, Taiyuan, Pingyao, Xi'an, Nanyang, Xiangfan, Jingzhou, Yichang, Fenghuang, Sanjiang, Rongjiang, Kaili, Xingyi, Kunming, Lijiang, Nanjiang, Jinghong, Megla, Mohan (Laos border) around 6500 km in 25 days
Of course we want to camp as much as possible.

Hi Macmice,

Sounds like a great plan.
I hope it all works well, and the tour guides and their prices don't relieve you of too much of your hard earned.

We now have found a German lady who is going to travel with us in her 4x4. She can take the guide in and we have asked a few more agencys for quotes so things should all in all be getting cheaper but we still hope to find more company to get the price down even more. Also been asking about the price and possibility of taking Tibeth in the plan but that's only a maybe as it is quite a way away from the route
Still Things are looking up

Hello! I'm leaving the UK on July 7th by motorbike to ride to Australia. My route takes me through China from Mongolia to Laos so I was also looking to split the costs with somebody, so pretty pleased to find this thread! :)
I'm fairly flexible with dates and ideally was looking for mid September at the latest, could you be flexible with your dates?

Many thanks,

Ollie

Hello,

This sounds really interesting. We are a Swedish couple both 49 living in England who will start an around the world trip in late May. We both have BMW F800 GS. We will travel from UK to Sweden and from there travel east to Russia Kazakstan, Mongolia etc. China is a country we would like to travel through but had until now not come across any one that would travel this rout at this time. As you we want to camp as much as possible and we are both easy going. We are very interested to join you through China.

Hi there to all of you

as you might have seen on our thread in HU we have found a car driver to take in the guide and we are all still looking for other people to join so yes you are quite welcome to come through China with us - who knows if we get on well - we might even travel a bit further together we do however want to have a bit of a look around Asia on the way.
We leave Germany on the 24 th of June but have a few days of sightseeing in Dresden and Prag along the way so we might be able to meet up before Mongolia.
We are fairly flexible where time and route are concerned but want to be in warmer regions before winter hits Mongolia and northern China - I am sure this is your idea too.
We will be in Britain in May for a last visit to friends and family so we could possibly meet to get to know each other if you like.

Just seen that Anders and Petra are staying near Macclesfield - how funny - that is close to Kev family - they live in Holmes Chapel near Crewe.

Let us know what you think and coordinate travel plans

Greetings

Me too - but 2014

HI - great to read this thread. I have just sent off to Navo to see if they can help. Unfortunately I will not be setting off until Spring 2014 as I want to tour Europe first then ride my bike (new 1200GS) back towards Oz.

I am thinking that if I cant get into China or its too expensive, then I can always ship it from Vladivostok... But I would really like to go through China and then south through Laos, Vietnam or Burma towards Oz.

Hope you will continue to post to this thread so I can keep in touch with how you go.

Regards
Michael

Hello Kerstin and Kevin,

It would be a great opportunity to meet up in May when you are in Britain and what a coincidence that you will be just around the corner of Macclesfield ☺. We will be in Macclesfield until the end of May when we will attend the Hubb UK event 30 May to 2 June. Then we are on our way, yeehaw. After that we are heading towards Nordkapp in Norway followed by Finland, Russia, Kazakhstan and Mongolia. We are quite flexible though, after we have been to Nordkapp.

What is the process when applying for visa etc. for traveling in China? Is it the travel agency who will sort everything out and how long will it take? Thinking about how long and when the passport need to sent off for.

Hope we can meet up in May bier
