Festival-au-desert, Mali

Hi. Leaving Ireland beginning of (this) December for Festival-au-Desert near Timbuctoo January 10th via Morocco, W Sahara, Mauritania. Anyone have similar plans? Solo on an 02 F650 Dakar. Continuing south after.

smokinrider 26 Oct 2006 08:32

doing a similar route at that time but am a bit flexible with my dates, i was going to stay in morocco over xmas and meet up with my g/f. what sort of routes are you considering on the way down. tarmac or piste? how are you getting to morocco via spain or france?

kk2ct 26 Oct 2006 22:42

Few pals sending me off in Malaga, so probably to Ceuta around 10th Dec - believe Tarifa-Ceuta crossing better, less hassly. Looking forward to checking out Fez/ Meknes then maybe behind Atlas south to Ouarzazate though haven't researched that yet. In Mauritania interested in heading across to Attar, Tidjikja, Nema and across. Maybe check out Mali before Festival if time allows, if not after. Not experienced on sand, though done some off roading (I'll see how things fare with luggage!). Has your g/f got a friend?! (Charming, handsome Irishman... etc, etc.)

smokinrider 26 Oct 2006 23:42

the score is that i have sold my house so i have to wait for all that to clear before i can leave uk. missus doesnt want to be alone at xmas so i said she can meet me in marocco. casablanca is favourite as air france fly there via pairis so i guess i have to be in or around casablanca for 23-27dec, then its full steam ahead. the mali festival sounds good so it would be good to get there for that. im flexible with return date and had hoped to go back via algeria and tunisia. you reckon from 27/12 i can get to the festival, its the 12/1 isnt it? dont want to rush.

I'll be there as well. '06 Dakar, tall English guy with blue Belstaff jacket. Also continuing south after. How about meeting in Bamako, then we can decide route - road or piste?

Hi Martin
Can meet in Bamako depending on timing - when do you get there after your Kudu trip? If not presume I'll spot the tall English rider in blue jacket at festival! (Understand there's only a few hundred Europeans there.) Smokinrider, seems you'll be enjoying the pleasures of Morocco while I'll be further south. From my reading seems you'll be fine with two weeks to Timbuctoo. Anyone else out there?

Bamako

Hi Hugh,

Should be in Dakar/Gambia at the beginning of December...so Bamako around 15th to 25th December? Maybe find somewhere nice for Christmas, then get to Timbuctoo for New Year?

Willem 30 Oct 2006 15:21

Hi guys, myself and a friend are planning to ride up from Accra, Ghana to Timbuctu from the 22nd of December till the 2nd of January. maybe we could all meet up in Timbuctu for New Years. He is riding a GS1150 and I am still looking for a bike.

Tully 30 Oct 2006 19:14

Hi guys,

I was thinking about getting out of the cold of London over the x-mass / NYE period and heading down to Moroc. Would be looking to leave in the week prior to x-mass. Riding a 1200 GSA and planning on camping/roughing it regardless of temperature. Haven't really sussed out routes yet, but comfortable on-off piste so open to suggestions. If anyone if going the same way and want company, give me a bell.

Tully.

Martin,
Looks like I could well be in that part of Mali around Christmas. You scout out a good spot! I'm thinking two weeks would get me down from Morocco. We'll play it by ear and keep in touch - I have your email if its the same. Maybe would suit Willem and Tully (sound like an exploring team) too...

dkmoose 31 Oct 2006 11:22

Sounds good to me.

Can anyone recommend accomodation/campsites in the area Bamako - Timbuctoo?

My email address is the same - martinafrica at gmail dot com

Leaving UK 27 December and spending New Year and few more days in Azrou, Middle Atlas, then moving south on 1200GSA. Expect to include Mauritania and maybe Mali, then Senegal.

If any of you are stopping over in Ouarzazate I can recommend Peter and Zineb's BikersHome

Hey everyone,

thinkin about leaving Munich, Germany for Xmas/NYE
and heading to Morocco, too. Like Tully, taking of
a Week before Xmas. Maybe some people like to
meet down there on their Way to the Festival ...
Lets stay in contact.

Tomboctou

Great site Edde, shame my connection is so slow for those sat shots. Any idea of what dates you'll be where? I'm planning to cross over to Morocco maybe Sunday 10th Dec destination Tomboctou (which I've been told is correct spelling!) January 10th... Didn't realise the symmetry. Thanks for the Ouarzazate recommendation Tim. Anyone else out there planning on heading south?
Hugh
