meeting up

Hi Tim
We will be in Panama, enroute for (flying to) Quito probably about at the same time as you, also heading 'down South'. We are 2 up on a Suzuki DL650, (should be ready to leave Panama, 12 Jan) and enjoy the benefits of hostels and hotels (no tent!), however, happy to meet up or ride together for a bit....
Sara (and Scouse)
PS Have you got any tips re. spanning the Darian Gap...i.e. cheapest route, did you fly?did you go via Colombia? what was the hassle factor?

Tim, Sara and Scouse,

We're in South Peru just now, working our way North towards Equador and Columbia, therefore our paths may cross along the way. Would be good to meet for a beer or two. Drop us an e-mail: emandhame at yahoo dot com

Cheers, Hamish

Ecuador going suth

I am currently in Salinas, Ecuador which is located on the Pacifice Coast. In a few days, I will cross into Peru and MAYBE arrive in Lima between Jan 15-20. I plan to stop at a couple of places on the way.

After that, it is Machu Pichu and Lake Titicaca. Then it is Chile in early February.

I am camping! And would enjoy a beer. Leaving Piura area today in N. Peru, and heading I think to Huarez, then Lima.

I crossed the Darien Gap a little more than a month ago and I am 99.5% sure that there is no ferry. There was a ferry 20 years ago I think but it closed after only a year or two of service.

This is a crossing where I think it is worth to plan in advance and pay the $550 (bike and you) standard price that the experienced sailboat captains charge in Portobello.

If you really want to save money, are willing to deal with multiple headaches, and spend maybe a week waiting than I would recommend driving South from Portobello to the town that is farthest South (forgot the name) on the Atlantic Coast. The road is very rough to get there, but I think there you will have the best chance of finding a private sailboat captain who is going to Colombia and firming up a cheap deal with him. I talked to an Australian guy who did this for $200 and he showed me the pictures of how his bike had to be lifted onto a zodiac and than winched up from the rear mast of the sailboat in the ocean.

I looked for sailboats in Panama City and Colon going to Colombia but did not have any luck in these places. I ended up taking a cargo boat from pier 7 in downtown Colon and it was a horrible experience. My bike was damaged, I had major customs problems entering Colombia, and the journey took 3 times as long as I thought it would.
