I'm in the very early planning stage for a trip to Oz next year also.
My proposed route looks similar to yours (the most direct as i see it) and i was hoping to take in an eclipse in India next July - only a thought at this stage.
My aim is to take about 2 1/2 months in all, meet my daughter in Darwin and ride down together to Perth where she lives, stay a couple of weeks and fly back leaving my bike out there for another trip the year after. I don't even know if that is a reasonable amount of time bearing in mind that i want to take in a bit of stuff on the way down but i have to put some sort of limit on it due to work and things.
I've not done a trip like this before so i've registered for the HUMP that's in the Events section in order to pick a few brains and meet some other travellers so it would be interesting to share information with you also. Cheers for now

I'm in the very early stages of planning a trip to India via Europe, Turkey, Iran, Pakistan, then hopefully to Cambodia & Laos. Planning to set off around June/ July 2009 & to camp wherever possible to experience the culture/environment & minimise the costs.
Looking for travelling companion(s) to share the experience, enjoy the ride & minimise the risks.

:clap:good to see that the is some intrest in a simular route and time.i was a bit lasy in puting the full route .after india i would like to fly to bkk and head north to loas then cambodia ,malasia,indonisia and then to darwin.all depending on money.i like the idea of camping to save on the coin .more beer money:welcome:

Do you have a proposed time frame for your trip?
My ideal would be to leave early July returning to the UK mid/late December but have nothing set in stone.
I am currently researching a time frame to allow enough time to see as much as possible ( possibly venturing off the beatan track) but possibly spending less time in Europe due to the £/E rate & my budget. I am planning to spend more time in India & around Laos, Cambodia & Thailand. Keep me posted as to your planning.

John - how do you intend leaving your bike in oz when you're not there with it? Because the aussie authorities don't allow this - always assuming, that is, you will be travelling under cover of a carnet.

Thanks Keith. That was a really useful link and throws a bit of a spanner in the works, i guess it will be a case of shipping it home.
How do these people who travel around the world in stages over a number of years manage?

Dunno for sure John. My bike(s) and I have never spent more than four months in any one overseas country - and I've never needed a carnet for these visits. E.g:

• a 13-week spell (summer 2007) + a 10-week spell (springtime 2008) on my UK-registered bike in North America - where a carnet is not required. The bike was imported/exported all within 12 months (I came back to winter-over in the UK); and
• a 4-month spell (2006-07) in New Zealand. No problem on this occasion either because I bought a NZ-registered bike down there, which incidentally, is right now in a kiwi storage depot (South Island). I guess you could say. 'where it belongs'.

I'm interested in this thread as I want to ship my Kiwi bike across 'the ditch' (Tasman) to aussie and spend time there before heading up and across to Singapore / Malaysia / beyond. I too was looking to explore oz in two distinct separate visits. See attached map. [red line outbound from NZ March-May next year ('09) - blue line up and out from the top end during early-mid 2010]. I was thinking of breaking-up the tour with a fly-back visit to the UK.

But this, of course, after my research, doesn't seem possible because of the aussie rules & regs. I don't want to disrespect their conditions by 'sneaking' home for a few months because this could easily be picked-up at customs. For instance, how could I explain a passport exit and a re-entry stamp out of /back into Australia with my bike parked-up in their country all that time? The penalty, if I got caught, could be a ton of money in costs + maybe ultimately even seeing kiwi bike destroyed!

In summary, and to answer your question, I'm assuming that foreign visitors to oz, travelling with their foreign-registered vehicles, must always import and get them back out of the country again, to 'somewhere else', within the 12 month carnet limit.

For me, I'm now thinking of doing the whole aussie tour thing in one 3-4 month visit; or alternatively keeping to the original two-tour idea, but shipping the bike back to NZ in between time. Either way I'm gonna have to rethink my whole itinerary AND indeed my overal budget (ouch! .. :()

early july would be good for me i would like to see a few stages of the tour de france.then get out of europe .maybe a bit of a stop at a few places in turkey.as for coming home? if i can get a work visa for oz ,i will then go to south amarica.no rush to get home just the money problem.

You've probably guessed already that i've not gone in to this in too much detail yet so i don't have a lot that i can help you with regarding the aussie side of things although i'm going to the HUMP near Bath later this month on a bit of a mission for information and then i'll get down to detail (whilst remaining flexible seems to be the order of the day)
Compared to most of the stuff i'm reading my trip next year seems to be a bit of a sprint, but your circumnavigation of Oz looks brilliant and just the sort of thing i would also love to do in a couple of legs. To spread it over a couple of years it might be a case of doing what you did in NZ and buy out there.
If i do come up with anything useful i'll share it with you here.
