Eastern Turkey 2011
Ever thought of trying to get to Doğubeyazıt, Turkey, to have a look at Mount Ararat, by way of ferry from Italy to Greece, but never get around to it as you would prefer to travel with company? Same here, so shall we do it??


Initially looking to set off around the end of May/early June to avoid the high summer temperatures. Sadly limited to around three and a half weeks due to an employer that, rather unfairly, expects me turn up at work occasionally!

Did Eastern Turkey last August/September - wonderful country & people. Quite a lot of roadworks going on and bikes limited to 70 kilometres per hour but that didn't spoil the enjoyment.

Had exactly the same thoughts and route in mind! Only I won't be able to make it this year because of family commitments. To compensate, this year my wife, daughter and I will explore Catalonia on our bikes but I am certainly planning to rough it in 2012 and head East! It would be interesting to see how far the Kawasaki Vulcan Cruiser gets me.....as they say:any bike will do!
So maybe next year, if you are still interested..

by way of ferry from Italy to Greece.

Hi,
have you looked into the ferry cost/availability? What sort of timetable do you have?
This has raised my curiosity. I am looking to do three months away, and have considered the Germany meet in June, then continuing onwards from there. But your trip could suit me to do as the 'first leg', but I would want to do a slow overland trip coming back. Want to see Slovenia etc, meandering back thru Europe. Any use to you, as a companion going out?

Motomike, what you are proposing sounds good to me. I am considering departing the UK around the 26 - 28 May (from Pompey as it is the nearest ferry port to home) to make use of the Bank Holiday Monday to save one day of holiday entitlement. I need to be back in the UK over the weekend of 18/19 June. As mentioned in my first post I am constrained due to by work.

Currently, Superfast Ferries are quoting around €37 each way for an adult, motorcycle and deck accommodation from Ancona to Igoumentisa. To maximise the time in Turkey, I envisage the journey down to Ancona to be the least enjoyable part as it would be the only section where covering the ground fairly rapidly would be required. I have done that before utilising the Italian Autostrade which added approximately €40 to the costs.

Any further thoughts?

Hi Emmbee. Just been looking at Google maps. The trip comes out at 4500km (2795) each way. Is 3 weeks enough for you, considering time spent on ferries, and the 70kmh (43mph) limit through 2000km of Turkey?
As I've said, I have plenty of time. I'm taking early retirement in May, and have no ties to keep me here. Let me know your timetable/distances/stopovers etc. I am up for a long trip both in time and distance, but don't intend breaking any records. I will be on a budget, camping in the main, B&B as required. Bike will be GS800.

Hi Embee and Motomike,

Don't underestimate how long it takes to get across Turkey due to the speed limits (raised for bikes to 80kph this year) and the road conditions. I went from Kas on the Turkish Med to Lake Van (2500kms) last year and it was 500km days for 5 days with little chance for sightseeing. The roads in the East are tough, though the scenery can be stunning.

If either of you pass by these parts do drop in.

Thanks for the info...I was afraid that might be the case after I looked at the broad view on google maps!!! Still, looks like a great adventure, though more time needed to get to actually see the place and appreciate the people.

Doğubeyazıt as a destination is an aspiration. It is not my intention to ride vast distances at any great speed every day, I wish to enjoy what I am doing not suffer. When I have completed half the number of days between my ferry arrival in Greece and the departure date I shall head back to Igoumentisa.

I wish to see different areas of Turkey other than the south and Mediterranean coast.

Hi Embee,

have you tried the Minoan Lines departing from Venice to Patras? They charge around € 180 for a roundtrip for one passenger and a bike when departing end of May and returning mid June.

I'm from Belgium and would like to get the hell out of here for some weeks , was planning to do iceland solo,
but turkey is also on my list ...

It's dropped off of the front page. But I've been beating the drum about it for sometime. From what I can see there is a lot of the same from what you are looking for and what I have in mind. Three week. Leave May back June. There's a Blog I'm doing That could be of interest for you to read.

Any way I'll leave it up to you. The more we have the better it gets
