Canuck heading into Baja Nov. 1

Hola y Shalom --

Thanks to this forum and its selfless contributors, I have a wee inkling of what I'm getting into. 1100RT and I depart interior BC October 21 to attend HU Traveller's Meeting Cambria Oct 25-28. Primed to meet some (if not all) of you savvy and cordial individuals there, and stoked to immerse myself in the collective spirit of adventure riding... far, far removed from the mediocrity of the ad biz and the orifice, er, office.

For the record, I quit my job to do this. Sold my old Ducati and bought an even older Beemer with a comfy seat and a fairing the size of Manitoba. Sold/gave away most every "collectible" and stick of furniture I owned, crammed all the rest into a 6' X 8' locker.

Strangely enough, NONE of my friends or family members thinks I'm crazy to do this. They know me too well.

Warmly welcoming intrepid company for the jaunt down Baja commencing November 6th-ish, likely crossing at Tecate. I'm bound for te La Paz ferry to Mazatlan and thence to Guatemala for several weeks of Spanish study and touring (minus parka) and mingling. Onward southward, no set agenda but a smile on board. Possibly parking awhile in Panama -- if not elsewhere sooner.

Any of my (loose) plans jive with yours? Suggestions? Admonition? Moral support? Drop me a line!

Yours in just getting the heck out there,
Seth in BC

Howdy Canucker!

Good luck on your adventures! I can't make the trip and I live an hour away from "La Frontera," in Escondido, north from San Yisidro.

If you need a layover before you cross you could bunk in an extra room w/ a comfy bed.

I'd also be happy to cross with you and help w/ Aduana.
Maybe I could show you the back way to Ensanada if you like. I know the area well. Heck maybe I'd even go with you down to Santa Rosalia or Muluge to camp a night on the beach.

Cheers mate y buena surte! Rob

Hey chap, me and Mrs Fox have just flown our bikes over from the UK. We're currently based in Whistler for the winter and will then slowly travel down the continent over the next year or 2. Although our time frames don't fit with yours it may be interesting to put heads together before you head south, depending on which part of BC you are in.

Also check out www.jabamundus.com 2 brits heading south from Vancouver later this week.

Hello Rob and Foxes -- Thanks for your contact and good wishes! By all means Foxes feel free to email me; I'm in Penticton just south of Kelowna in the BC interior. You will love Whistler (presuming of course that you brought over whellbarrowsful of cash to stay fed and comfy in that idyllic but exorbitant all-seasons paradise). Thanks for the link to Jon's and Andrew's website by the way.
Rob, I warmly welcome your very generous offers and vow to call you from my buddy's in Salinas (post-Cambria meeting Oct. 27 until Nov 4th). Hope that post-Nov 4 time frame works for you; cannot leave sooner as my hardworking buddy has booked time off work to hang with me. Please tell me the best way to contact you and I will surely do so.
Tomorrow: oil change and new brake pads front and rear. Found a free manual online and got 'er copied and bound. Weather's looking good for next week but one never knows how long the winter will tarry on its inexorable, savaging path towards us. (Then again, if Canuckistan were warmer it would have been overrun and overpopulated -- likely by Americans seeking affordable health care -- a long time ago!)
Look fwd to communicating more!

Congratulations and best of luck on your travels. You are about to embark on what many wish they had done, in my case, 20 years ago.

You should, without a doubt look into and register at advrider.com if you have not already done so. It is arguably the best site for adventure riders for information and SUPPORT.

I wish you much success.

I recently rode through BC. I did 3500 miles from San Francisco to Calgary then west through BC in mid-June through that rain storm that flooded Alberta. Touring and camping on a sportbike. Crazy!

Yolanda's in La Manzanilla del Mar

Hola Sethman! Should you ride down hwy 200 south of Puerto Vallarta any time soon there is a seaside restaurant that xriders Yolanda runs with partner where riders are known to stop in for awhile. They have accommodation nearby. The tiny fishing village is La Manzanilla del Mar (Jalisco) and 20km north of Melaque. I plan on riding down with GF as soon as vstrom is out of Valley moto sport, unless of course weather is impossible...
Safe riding and enjoy it. watch out for the TOPE (speed bumps)
Ciao - Gord

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
