Destination Mongolia; Summer 2011

Plans beginning to fall into place.

Set to leave from the proposed German ADV event near Siegen in Germany Whitsun weekend 2011 (12/13th June) heading for the Russian Sidecar Motocross GP at Kamensk-Uralskiy scheduled for 10th July, probably via Poland, Lithuania, (Belarus?), Latvia, Estonia, (Finland?) and Russia.

Two options from there. Either on to Ulan Ude and Ulaanbaatar and then back through Mongolia and home via Kazakhstan, Ukraine, Moldova, Romania, Hungary, Slovakia and Czech Rep. (likely) or dip into Mongolia at Tsanaguur for a couple of days and then back via more of the 'stans, Turkey, Bulgaria etc. (possible). Aiming to be back in Western Europe 31st August.

Anyone interested to help shape plans and link up for all or part, most welcome.

Hey Paul,

I'm looking at going the same way - well at least the bit from the Czech
Republic onwards - but i'm still dithering on whether to go 2011 or 2012. 2011 is winning at the moment though. I'd be quite interested to swap plans and ideas, and I've got a few bits of 'local' info from my sister in law who is a proud Mongol. It certainly helped me when I went there a few years back (not on a bike though) as she opened quite a few doors which would otherwise have remaied firmly shut to foreigners!

Hey Belle!

It'd be cool to have someone along with some 'inside knowledge'!

PM sent.

Best

Paul

can you tell me a bit more about this event please ?
may I can join you for parts of the way (via Germany, Ukraine, Moldova, Romania, Hungary, Slovakia and Czech Rep) plan to go to Turkey next year.
the Russian Sidecar Motocross GP at Kamensk-Uralskiy scheduled for 10th July, probably via Poland, Lithuania, (Belarus?), Latvia, Estonia, and Russia. sounds promising...

living not that far away from Siegen (only 50km)... but haven't heard anything about this Adv event so far... is there a annual meeting/webside/contact or such, may even this June/year ?

thanks

Hi spooky

The first event was a couple of weeks ago (Whitsun was early this year). We had fantastic weather in Neidersolbach, nice bunch of guys, excellent riding and a really great venue.

Turkey in the summer sounds hot!

Hi Lisa

The Pamir Highway always looks so wonderful in Ride Reports and blogs, I'd love to do it. My concern is trying to do too much in the limited time I have and simply not enjoying it as I'm rushing too much. I want to get three 'ticks' on my list; Northern Asia (Russia, east of the Urals), Mongolia and Central Asia (the 'stans).

With only seven and a half weeks between heading east from Ekateringburg to being back in the UK, I think both is too much and I have to make a difficult choice; either ten days in Mongolia and through Kazakhstan on the way there/back or a couple of days in western Mongolia and then down to the 'stans. Although I'd love to ride the Pamir and visit Samarkand, I'm thinking the first option gets it done with time to enjoy Mongolia. Maybe I'm just being too cautious.

Following your RR at ADV. I'd already bookmarked your site.

Best wishes for your continuing trip.

Paul

Hi Guys!
Glad i found this thread. Im looking into going from Mongolia-Sweden on a ATV.

is there a route through russia? starting from Irkutsk?
or would you recomend to go through other countries?

i cant find much info on how to get through the western part of Russia, i figured that should be the easy part.

please share the info you manage to gather.

colebatch 11 Nov 2010 07:34

As mentioned in another post ... the whole bit will be the easy part. The hard part will be staying awake.

Maps will be available in any map shop in Russia, many petrol stations in Russia, or Stanfords in London.

Hard to discuss whether to recommend other countries without knowing what you want to achieve. Do you want a challenge? Do you want to do 5000km of offroad, or are you just trying to get the quad to Sweden?

Hi Paul,
I've only just seen this thread. Are you guys planning on having another meeting? I'd be interested in coming along on the trip if numbers aren't getting too great.

Regards,

Rick

Wildman 4 Dec 2010 17:26

PM and e-mail sent Rick.

There's two definites, one very probably and seven maybe's right now. We're hoping for a group of four or five.

I seem to have started several threads about this trip in different forums. The most up to date in terms of current information is here.

Walter. We're planning to get together in London for a Christmas drink and planning session in the next couple of weeks. If you're in London and could stomach being bought a few beers in return for some of your inside knowledge, you'd be most welcome!
