I just crossed a few weeks ago. No ferry. Best (cheapest) option is a shared 40 ft container. Cost us $454 each, all included on both sides (Panama and Columbia). Contact teakalmbach@hotmail.com She works with Evergreen and can get you across. Hopefully you shared the container with a Spanish speaker... you'll need it. Make sure your paperwork when crossing into Panama is 100% correct. Otherwise you won't get police permission to leave the country (and they will first fail your police inspection on exit) and you're in for a lengthy trip to customs in Panama City to get it corrected. They did our paperwork wrong six times when entering Panama (both insurance and temp import permit). Get it corrected! Espcially since I have a long VIN number WBxxxGxxxx etc., they screwed it up.

Or you can pay a little more, something like US$900 and make it really fast and easy. I used Girag. My experience below.

I am in SoCal. heading towards Texas Monday or Tuesday and heading down into eastern Mex next Monday or Tuesday.

Personally, I believe using Ludwig the skipper of the Stahlratte Sail boat out of Panama is the best bang for your dollar...Google the Stahlratte....cost including the bike with meals for 4 days and the paper work to enter Columbia is about 900.00 US....he makes it an Adventure Holiday with time spent enjoying the San Blas Isl

So all’s well that ends well. However if you are researching a way to get to Colombia from Panama and stumbled on this post, I strongly advise you, DO NOT even consider taking the MS Independence. Sure it wasn’t the luxury cruise many of us were expecting it to be. Turns out not many of the boats that ply this route are. I can get over that, but I cannot forgive the lack af safety equipment on board. Eight lifejackets, for twenty eight people (bundled away in a difficult to get to location.), one lifesaver, and heinous lack of crew. I don’t like to do a hatchet job on anyone – that’s not the purpose of this blog – but if you value your life, do not get on board this boat!
