riding to Costa Rica Feb/March 2007

I am riding one-way from California to Costa Rica next Spring and would like to travel with 1 - 2 others headed that way. I do have a timetable which allows for up to 3 weeks to get there once I cross into Mexico. Experienced rider with good Spanish, but haven't ridden in Latin America previously. E-mail or send private message if interested.

I am not going thro Baja, riding down the west coast of mainland Mexico into Guatamala and points beyond instead. Where's your destination? I might be able to be in Mazatlan in late Feb. altho I'd planned to be there earlier. Anyway, you can ride/keep your bike in Costa Rica for 3 months with a tourist permit; this can usually be renewed for an additional 3 months but you have to leave the country for 48 hours and have your passport restamped to get the extension. Beyond that time, you have to either get the vehicle out of the country or pay customs on it. (very expensive). I believe however, that you can store a vehicle at the customs office until you pay the duty. There are shipping options back to the States from Panama, but I don't know much about that.

Mauricio, we're a bit hamstrung by the forum rules which don't allow PM's until 8 posts. Am interested in discussing your trip in more detail so e-mail me at : californiagecko@yahoo.com

To Mexico from US mid Feb

Hi Dave,
I'm traveling to Buenos Aires crossing into Mexico at about the same time as you I think. Haven't decided where I'll cross yet. I'm in Tallahassee, Florida at the moment. I had to stop here on my way from Montreal when I broke my collarbone. Its healed now and I'll be heading off in a few days time. Maybe we can hook up for at least some of the way?
Tim

Guys, I am about to leave central Mexico for Chiapas and then further south. Would like to find a riding partner.

Also, you may want to refrain from posting your email address. It should be available in your profile.

shipping from Panama

If anyone wants to ship from Panama back to the U.S by air. . . you might want to reconsider

Sadly I could only find one shipper that would even talk about it. A company named ARROW (a kissing cousin to GIRAG) finally said they would ship my bike. They didn't seem to have any experience at building a crate and would not determine a price until the crate was built and could be weighed with the bike. I had to accompany workers around Panama to find lumber and nails for the project (I had to pay for the materials at each stop) I could continue to express the horror of that day but I won't. The cost was a bit over 800.00 back to Miami. plus the 150.00 for building the crate and 50.00 in materials.
