Chile to Canada anyone??
 

hi im in santeargo chile at this time trying to learn spanish and buy a motorbike (XR650) then head south and then north to canada overland
sound like you or keen to meet up along the way

I have to ask this. Mid December in Canada, Depending where you arrive, is not prime motorcycle season. Please go to your local market and ask if you can sit in their walk in freezer for an hour or two and then try to imagine something colder.

I love my country but plewase try this somewhere between May and October.

I hope to be heading up to Alaska from the deep south after the HU meet in Argentina but when I depart Mexico I intend to follow spring time as it moves north which I reckon means arriving in Canada mid April earliest. If you slow down I will be looking for company through Central America just in case I meet up with the little s**t who ripped me of last time I was transiting continents, I need someone to hold him while I hit him.

I also lived in santiago and studied. I then took a job in the north of chile and in the middle of december i plan on making the motorcycle trip north. If you are interested in waiting until mid december, summer season here, until you make the trip, i would be very intrested in accompaning you.

To be honest with you, and yes its worth the money, i would head north to Iquique for a weekend to look at bikes. Its the taxless zone here in chile and bikes going for 4,000,000 pesos on the regular market go for around 1,200,000 pesos there. A bus pass will run ya about 25 - 40,000 i think, but in a month or so when i go for my bike, I will be buying it there. You need to be a foreigner though for it to work on your side, if not they make you camp out there for around 3 months before the viechle can leave "la zona franca".

I will be leaving in mid december heading north.

iam from new zealand and have 5 motorcycles back home, i love riding bikes and have done so since i was 5.
but i dont have any experince in buying motercycles in south america
do you know anyone that has brought a bike there
what about border crossings any probs (TAX/DOCUMENTION)

Hey, what i can tell you, i will tell you as i find out. I also dont know a whole lot yet, but if you buy the bike here in chile, i am pretty sure that you need to regester it here as well. This will help you at border crossings a tone! The more papers the better. I will be interviewing someone here that has been traveling on motorbike here in south and central america for more than 5 years. He is canadian and has done the rout before. I am going to sit down with him and a map and go over routes. One interesting piece of info he shared was that you can bypass columbia entirely if one wants to. I prefer to do so, especially if i am alone on the road. More info to come.

Yea, i hear what your sayin about columbia. It will take some talking around, but it prolly not as risky as one thinks... and maybe 100 times less with two people.

To reg a bike, the cost depends on the bike, but it is a yearly deal that usually costs around 30,000 pesos or so. It is nice to have the bike regestered to a south american country because you can always re-regester it in another and the border patrol takes you more seriously the more papers ya got written in spanish.
