Chicago to Panama Nov-Dec 2013

Hello all, I am heading from Chicago to Panama, over a 8-10 week period, to enjoy the culture and national parks, scuba diving and relaxing beaches/surfing. I have been to Guatemala for 3 weeks, and Nicaragua 10 days, and Costa Rica 35 times over 10 years, so this trip is all about getting to where I didnt have time to go, or enjoying my favorites.

I plan to skip Honduras as I have been diving there at Roatan/Utila and it would be easier to go down Pacific coast from El Salvador to Nicaragua via the Gulf of Fronseca with bike on a cargo boat..bypassing 2 borders and the CA1.

I will probably have a Triumph Tiger 800XC, do some camping where its safe/possible and mainly bee line it thru MX. I will stop in Dallas on way to stay with a friend and leave winter gear with, and pick up on way back in late Jan...

I am not sure If I will tour all of Belize, for sure the cayes for diving, which would require putting bike in storage.

My background is well traveled, lived in Asia, been to all of SE Asia, motorcycled Burma/Thailand/Laos/Vietnam and also north Africa's Morocco. I am in the motorcycle business with Ducati, Triumph, MV Agusta and KTM.

Interesting scheduling choices, Tim. Leave Chicago late November, return to Chicago February. Two wheels. No studs.

What have you done with the real Tim?

Hi Tim
Arrive in Guatemala in early November and will undertake some Spanish lessons ( most probably in Xela) and buy a bike for a tour of the rest of Central america. Keen diver and boogie boarder but no plans for camping..

Also travelled those places you mention and lived in SE Asia . Now retired and currently in my motorhome in Europe.

Perhaps we could meet for a beer in Guatemala and see if our plans coincide

Regards

Mark, I dont have much of a choice, thats is why I want to head due south from Chicago, so I can get to Memphis and hopefully no freezing conditions. I plan to leave my cold weather gear in Dallas, and pick it up on way back in late Jan...and hope to hell I can get to at least St Louis, where I have family, but if I get stuck, I will leave bike at a dealer and fly back, as I am in the motorcycle business...

As for the other replies, as I get closer to Nov we need to touch base for sure...

Hi Gents --
Eclectic, itinerant, somewhat direction-challenged Canuck dude, 52, crossing over on an rt1100 at Nogales (or Douglas) AZ second week of November, seeking riding/larfing/drinking compadres for the boogie down Panama way (to' I'd like to stop, smell the roses and study Spanish, probably in Guatemala). Currently in Salinas helping empty my mate's beer fridge and gorging on his wife's superb Korean cooking. Headed to AZ on the 5th. Drop me a line sethklapman@hotmail.com if you want to meet up. Cheers!
