Charity Ride to Mohne Dam - May 2013

Dambusters2013 is a charity ride based upon the idea of the Toy Run or Egg Run. It is a ride to commemorate the 70th Anniversary of the Dambusters Raid and will start at RAF scampton on 14th May and finish at the Mohne Dam on 16th/17th May just after midnight. All riders are asked to raise and donate £250 for Help for Heroes to take part.

Full details can be found at dambusters2013.org.uk - Home. The ride is approved by Help for Heroes (Help for Heroes) and Motorcycle Outreach (Motorcycle Outreach | healthcare needs delivery) and carries the full support of 617 sqdn, RAF - the real Dambusters!

Fancy a ride out to Germany in May and up for raising a bit of cash for Help for Heroes?? Visit us at dambusters2013.org.uk - Home and sign up to be a part of a ride out and event that will be both great fun and do some good at the same time!

I wonder what the locals think of your ride.

The rise is a commemoration of the loss of life on both sides as a result of the raid. It is not triumphal in nature at all.

We are in contact with the local authorities around the Dam and seeking to include bikers from the locality in Germany to join the final portion of the ride. The end of the event will be the laying of two wreath, one in German and one in English onto the waters of the Mohnesee at the same time as the raid went in on that night in 1943.

Your point is a good one and we are seeking at every turn to make sure the event remains one of rememberance of all loss, which will also via the charity nature of the ride also do some good in today's world as a result.

Riders on this forum from Germany would be as welcome on the ride as those from the UK.

Simon

Good cause and good ambitions Simon, best of luck. I would join in but I think a Land Rover Discovery would be a little conspicuous as not fitting in!! :taz:

Ball park figures for loss of life on the ground during the raid on the Mohne Dam was 1500 in total, 1150 being Russian slave workers in camps near to the dam. The gift shop at the dam sells models of Lancaster bombers, so I think the Germans have come to terms with what happened.

Total loss on the 'German' side probably got up to nearer 3000 and the Raid is known as the 'Great Disaster' locally. We are very mindful of the sensitivities. That said, I was there for the same dates last year and was made very welcome so I do agree that it is now 'part of history'.

If any HUBB members fancy joining Dambusters2013 at www.dambusters2013.org.uk we would be delighted to have them!
