So. Calif. to Baja & Mainland Oct./Nov. 2010

My brother and I are planning to ride the length of Baja, Mexico, then cross the Gulf via ferry, ride Copper Canyon, and then head south for as long as feasible before we need to turn North to get home before we lose our jobs. Or, we may decide to ride the mainland first, get as far south as we can in the four weeks we have, then come back up through the Baja on our way back. We're flexible. I'm on a '09 BMW F800 GS, and my brother will be riding a '10 KTM 990 Adventure R. We want to do as much off-road exploration as possible. We don't expect to camp as we've read that most traveler to this part of the world opt for the safety of motels/hotels. I'd rate us as intermediate dual-sport riders, but are certainly willing to ride with riders with more or less skills that we have.

We plan on leaving So. Cal. Oct. 23, returning Nov. 21, 2010. If anyone is interested in riding all or a part of this itinerary, please contact me.

I was planning on doing Tecate to Cabo Oct 21 - Nov 3 (arrive in Cabo for the Dia Los Muertos Celebration-day of the dead). The person who was going to go with me bailed today.

I have the BajaGPS guides Vol 1 and Vol 2. We were planning on camping and roughing it most of the way. Staying on intermediate to difficult trails.

Ive never been to Baja. I live in Birmingham Alabama. I will be shipping my bike to San Diego then crossing the border in Tecate.

Then shipping my bike back to Birmingham from Cabo and flying home.

I will be on a Yamaha XT225.

Im looking for someone to team up with soon or else ill be going solo.

Hi, you may take the ferry from La Paz to Topolobampo thats a 6 hour trip, then ride to Cooper Canon. I live in Mazatlan 4 hours south from Topolobampo or from Los Mochis I hope I can catch you up. My email is dosuna78@hotmail.com

Hi, I would like to do the same but Id be going south to Puerto Vallarta and then see if I can rent a place for a while and then scoot around the country for a few weeks.. I am leaving approximately the same time (hopefully my girlfriend accepts). Im not too sure of off roading since I would have some frame issues. I have an Xr650 with a baja kit. It is a weak spot and Id like to not break it.. so I would be slow if Im going off road.. anyway. I am planning on going south to Ensenada then over to San Felipe. Then south to Cabo before taking the Matzatlan ferry.. but good luck to you both. Sounds like a great adventure.. be careful in Copper Canyon. Lots of drugs and death that away!

I am going there too.. I didnt think about the fiesta though.. Sounds cool.. I am on an xr650, I also have a gps. I live in Redding,ca which is near Oregon and I planned on leaving in mid October and being in Puerto Vallarta by Nov. About 7-10 days or so.. Ive been to Baja as a kid. I went camping with my father. And this is my preferred method of lodging, because It extends the budget.. I know a lot about this part of Mexico. but its been 25 years so my info might be a little dated... If your going to San Felipe 1st I could maybe meet you there..

Thanks for the call today. I have October 24th down on my calendar for meeting you at Mikes Sky Ranch. Plans are still up in the air for me. be sure that I will let you know if I will be there or not.

I will arrive in San Diego on October 19th.

We plan on crossing the border at Naco, riding to Copper Canyon, then south to the Yucatan, then to Acapulco on the coast, ride up the coast a bit, cross the gulf from Puerta Vallarta to San Lucas, then up Baja, re-entering the states probably at Mexicali. We have four weeks to do all this, so we'll be doing quite a bit of riding. And, we have to be flexible 'cause although the general itinerary is laid out, there will be things we find out about along the way that we'll probably want to divert to.

Consider Pie de la Cuesta (20 miles north) vice Acapulco. Beaches are much nicer and a LOT less crowded. Stayed there a couple of times and loved it. AVOID Acapulco if posible. Unless a new ferry route has spring up, you will have to go north to Mazatlan and then cross to La Paz. Nice newer ferry (even has a nice bar and dance floor. You do Salsa right?) and about a 12 hour crossing. I did this route in March and April.
