Dual Sport Adventure this winter

Hi everyone,

I'm just getting into dual sporting after some incredible offroad adventures in the Andes earlier this year...

I'd like to make some new motorbike friends that want to go on some on/offroad dual sport adventures this winter. I live in Vancouver, BC Canada but am thinking of riding down to Southern California or beyond (somewhere with good conditions in January-February) to get some offroad practice and adventures in.

I like light, agile machines that can play in the dirt as well as on pavement so I'll probably go with a KLX250S... In Peru I did about 500km on mixed paved/dirt trail over 3 days (70% dirt by distance - Cusco - Calca - Lares - all the way down to Quillabamba - and back up the sacred valley to Urubamba - Cusco - plus several other trips around that area) (on a Ronco Trueno 250 that I bought down there).

I consider myself a new / novice rider, but I'm safety conscious and I also like having some fun. I'm not looking to hit up super technical stuff... more of an adventure/exploration suitable for someone relatively new to riding.

Any recommendations for trips or connections with new riding buddies?

Please be in touch if any of this sounds interesting to you!

Cheers,
Mark

That's a good plan Mark!
You have lots of options.
One is to start hanging out on this San Diego based riders forum:
 Index page

These guys are more advanced but also run novice classes and novice specific rides. They mostly ride in SoCal Deserts but also venture into Baja and ALL OVER California.

In California you can ride the Mojave Desert. In Nevada you can ride the Black rock Desert. In Baja ... you can ride the entire 1000 mile length of this magical peninsula and you'll be surrounded by thousands of your fellow Canadians. (in the touristy areas)

If you Couch Surf on your way down ... and contact forum members here and on ADV Rider, I'm betting you can get guys to take you on little one to two day local rides. Once you get to Mexico ... you can play in Baja for months if you have the time. Lots of varied riding from easy to ... impossible.
(for now, I'd avoid the impossible ... like Cry Baby Canyon )

Mojave near California City

Pinnacles monument near Death Valley

Black Rock Desert (near site of Burning Man event)

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive.
