From Canada to South America - October 2010 - March 2011

Quick introduction: I am about to live a dream; a 6 months trip (or longer) to South America this fall :scooter:. My goal is to ride from Prudhoe Bay to Tierra del Fuego, doing the southern part first. I would prefer going with other rider(s) for safety reasons, so my mom would'nt worry as much.

I don't have a set schedule but I have health, a bike/equipment and lots of time. I'd like to see as much as possible and would not mind going in remote areas if there are things to see. I am bilingual French/English and I think I will learn Spanish quickly. I will probably stop somewhere in the way at some school to learn Spanish for a week or a month before going further south...

I am perfectly fine with camping, couches, simplicity, and meeting people and travelers along the way, so if you live down south or are going to travel there feel free to drop me a line! I'd like to gather as much contact info as possible and hopefuly meet some of you guys for a beer

Cheers,

Simon

Hi Simon,

My 18 year old son and I have shipped our bikes to Chile and meeting them there on October 7, 2010. Shipping the bikes south and riding north allows for more time to sightsee and avoids the fall rainy season through Central America. Our plan is to be home (near Vancouver) mid April. We have already ridden to Prudhoe Bay and back in 2008.

Our plan is to ride north from Valparaiso to Lima and fly to the Galapogos Islands for 10 days. Then Machu Picchu, Road of Death, Salar de Uyuni and so on down to Ushuaia and back, touring most, if not all the countries in South and Central Americas.

Based on what we have heard, hotels and hostels are abundant and inexpensive, so we do not plan on camping.

You and others are welcome to join us for part or all of the trip, or as long as we are heading in the same directions. There will be numerous riders doing similar trips, so I understand that many paths will cross. Some riders ride together for a few days and others longer. All makes the journeys unique to everyone.

Regards

Mark

That's an awesome plan Mark! I'd love you join you in a part of your trip, you've covered pretty much what I wanted to see and do!! I have some miles to do before reaching Chile but I'd still like to have your info see if we can meet :mchappy:.

Thanks for responding to my thread!! and checks your emails :)

Good luck on the trip Simon. You'll likely run into riders all along the Gringo Trail. Certain parts of Mexico (Oaxaca, San Cristobal) and Guatemala (Lake Atitlan) get a lot of travelers passing through constantly. Also, riders tend to gather in Panama waiting to get across, either by plane or boat.

If you stay in one spot a few days you'll likely meet lots of others headed your way. Spanish classes; great idea. With French you should pick it up quickly.

Couch Surfing is a great idea. If you're on a BMW, there are several very active and helpful BMW clubs. I know the Mexico one is good, El Salvador too. More if you look around.

travelling us to sa similar dates

Hey Simon, I am planning to leave Wisconsin around Nov 1 and be near the Mexican Guatamalan border around Nov 15-30. Let me know if you think our dates/locales might match. Your general riding philosphy is consistent with mine. I am 48, have a bike, equipment, 10 wks of Rosseta Stone Spanish under my belt, and to give security to your mom(they never get enough) I'm a physician. My plan is Tierra del Fuego and back over 6-9 months.

Wow, sounds like a great trip! Color me jealous!

Someone mentioned hostles above, and I wanted to mention that they are pretty decent. Not nice, by any means, but they tend to do the trick rather nicely. Typically you have a shared bathroom, and you can stay in a dormitory style room, or in a private room. My wife and I take the kids and get a private room in Moab all the time. By the way, they have dormitory rooms that are Male, Female, and Co-ed, so if you are not one to want to sleep in the same room as some hippy chick you have never met before, well, be sure to specify! :)

I expect the hostels in the US are more expensive, but for a price concept it seems like they are about seven to ten bucks per person per night. For a USA rate, that is smoking good.

Cheers
