Can we travel in West Africa with our dog ?

I will be crossing west Africa by bus and train and I would like to know if someone knows if it’s possible to travel with a dog on the buses/trains in Africa ? And if it’s possible to stay on the hotels with the dog?
Thank you for your help.

Your biggest concern should be to get your dog home again.

We live in South Africa and are busy re locating to the UK. Our dogs need many injections and 6 months quarantine in the UK. We can send them to France without quarantine, but still many injections and rules and about Euro 4 000.

Generally, in Africa, if your dog has a "Trainee guide dog vest" you can take it anywhere. We made up 2 ourselves just for fun and always get away with it! Most Africans are a little scared of dogs, or they just don't really pay them any attention.

Hi, If your dog is one mean, bad, snarling motherf**&er, do many of us a big big favour and let him loose at the Rosso border, and I am sure many of us would 'chip in' a few € towards any costs!

Hello Formiga!

I don't have a good answer to your question, but I think there was a tread in her about travelling with dogs. And most importantly a link to a book about it. I have searched long and wide to find this link again, but with no luck so far.
We to want to travel with our dog, so if anyone know anything about this book scream out!

Cheers Tom

There you go Tom-
You are talking about Lorraine Chittock and her book 'On a mission from Dog' - easy to find with Google!

That's an older post with some info. On a Mission from Dog talks about my travels with DOG, but doesn't offer step by step advice. I'm still working on Four Paw Travel which will, but it's not finished yet! In the meantime, if you send me your email addresses, I can send you two magazine articles I've done which includes info from plenty of other dog travelers. I'm the only one I know who's done the bus thing, and only a few times with very mixed (but interesting) results. In East Africa some flat out refusals, other times wild amusement that someone would travel in a matatu/lorry with a DOG. Chickens yes, goats yes, but a DOG????

email is: lc at lorrainechittock dot com

A bit of a silly reply, but true none-the-less in Bobo-Dioulasso, Burkina faso they eat dog and i have seen several tails hanging in the grand marche' meat sellers section so if you head that way keep a tight eye and leash on him!
Good luck
Xander
