From California, Ride Around South America Fall 2010

Hey all, this is something of a lifetime goal for me, and I'm looking for someone(s) with a similar goal. I don't have many specifics as to where I want to go, and what I want to do, but I know I want to do a big loop around South America. I would expect such a trip to take somewhere around 6 months... I don't know if I could afford to do any more than that. I would really like to ride my bike back up, just because I really can't imagine parting with it.
I feel like spending a little time before the trip to make sure I've got the right person with me is important. I'm not sure if this is someone that would come with me for the entire trip, or maybe we would part ways at some point and do something different. I definitely want someone nearby when I get break my leg during a head on collision with a cow, first to take pictures, but also to get me to safety. I would hope you're looking for the same thing.

A little about me:
I'm 23 years old. I live in San Francisco. I ride a KLR 650 (2009). I like to work on my own bike. I currently work doing IT work, and am setting aside savings for the trip. I don't have any real limitations on who I would want to go with. I want to meet someone that I can depend on, and that can depend on me for whatever we need along such a journey.

Anyway, drop a line, and we can connect and dream up a trip.

Timing is a bit off. Two of us are leaving from San Jose California early Jan 2010 headed for SA. We only have 2 months so we will see how far south we get, hopefully to Santiago. Good luck on your trip.

traveller looking for another

Cory, nice to meet you. I am just in the planning stage of the same trip, basicly. I am leaving in mid nov. from Redding, Ca up north of you. take 1 down to LA and then baja and cross over from La Paz to Mazatlan, and so on.. Ive got no time limit really, I kinda wanna live down in either Costa Rica or Ecuador. Maybe? Gotta check em out first of course..

Ive been down baja a few times in the old days (70's- early 80's) and had lots of fun, with my dad camping.

I have a CX500D with lower miles. Its been gone through and I have a couple of things left to do, change a front tire and change the fork seals up front.. other than that a good little ride.. and comfy..

I have saved up some, but need to figure out what to do for a living, and the internet is a maybe option.. Im just not a techie really.. or maybe getting a scuba license and doing that.. sounds better really!

Well good luck! maybe we'll run into each other on the way to SA.

Robert

Hey Bonedust68, seems to me that Cory's post is way old................

Anyway I think I saw you posting before about going down Baja and even South America. Well I am sure because I noticed you are from Redding, and I am in Red Bluff !
I am leaving Red Bluff about the first week of November plus or minus a week !
I have posted here a number of times to see if I could find a few others willing to travel part or all the way with me to Cabo ! But seems not to be happening !
So I am going to be traveling solo for the start at least ! I plan on taking 2 weeks to get to Panama as I did that trip 2 years ago and this trip is for South America ! However if I find suitable companion I could spend more time getting there if they needed to see a bit of Centarl America.

Anyway, anybody wanting to travel at a moderate pace to South America at least and then Cabo let me know at onleeemeee@yahoo.com

south pole or bust?

Hey Glenn, yeah your right about that other guys post, and your closer than S.F.
So althoug you are shooting on down south pretty fast. I guess you have some flexiblilty, but Im not sure if Im gonna get going until the 2nd or 3rd week really kinda bogged down with things, life, whatcha gonna do?

Im going to go through Tecate then Felipe and back to Ensenada continuing down to cabo.. at least thats one plan.. other than that, Im in nooo rush, I figure 300 miles a day is good enough, and take off a day for every 3-4. Im thinking of it as a sabatical.

If we see each other cool, I will be riding a beat up old lookin (but rides good, I swear!) '80 Honda CX500 I bought at cycle salvage here in town for $350. It cost more though with some work, oh well I love it anyway..
by the way what will you be taking for transportation?

Hi Robert,

I also have a old bike, and I also love it, it is a Honda 500 also and 1981 model It is dual sport XL500s to be exact. I got it when it was 9 months old and it has never let me down ! Uses about one quart of oil every 500 miles or so but as long as I keep it topped off it is fine, leaks some oil on cylinders so I have to wash it frequently also. Two years ago I went to Panama and back with it, not a problem with it at all not even a flat ! (however on return in L.A. it got stolen at a hotel parking lot and it was 3 months before I got a call from the sheriff to pick it up !)
Last time we left on Oct first and hit quite a bit of rain in Central America and was told in a couple of week it would not be so rainy, which is why I chose Nov first this time. Could wait a little but if you are saying 3rd week in November then that is really too late for me (only because I am anxious to get started not that I do not have the time, I plan on staying as long as April 2011 if need be ! )(or longer, who knows ?)
I have the bike all ready, put a windshield have 2 new rear tires one new front tire, will only change front tire in San Diego and carry 2 new rears with me, plus a new chain. I have packed everything and still have space left over !
Taking tent and cot but last time did same and never use them, their cheap so I may give them away if I really do not use them, really they are for insurance in case I do not find a place while in Baja, last time we sometimes found ourselves driving at night in these little dusty places with no rooms for rent. Once back on mainland it is not hard to find places. But I will again try to camp a few time so as to save money this time (but after 300 miles, which by the way is what I do drive on average, I really want a soft bed and shower !
Anyway if you can leave before middle of November and not planning on taking forever in Central America then it seems we might be able to travel together ! If not perhaps I will see you somewhere between here and Panama (or even S.A.) (after all I don't think there will be a lot of Honda 500's I will be seeing so I will certainly regognize you!!)

(any one else interested please contact me.................it IS getting close to Nov 1 !!!)

Glenn

xl500 right on

Hey Glenn sounds really cool, I like those old bikes they just keep on chugging dont they? I have an XR650R but it hurts my body after a hundred miles or so.. Just a big ol red pig too.
So Im not so sure Im going yet after all. I just got another job.. and it pays well. Although Im bored to death thinking about staying here just for financial reasons. But If I do go I would love to see that ride you have.. maybe we'll race. Youd win in the dirt for sure..
