BMW from South Africa to Europe

Is anybody interested……. In riding a motorbike back to Europe from South Africa.

I am arriving in Cape Town at the end of November with my 2001 BMW Dakar this will have less than 30,000 miles on literally just under the ride from Europe.

This is an opportunity for somebody to ride the bike back. The reason for this is that shipping/flying the bike is crazy expensive and my girlfriend is expecting so could do with that 1000 English pounds in my pocket.

Now here are the details

To ride a bike through Africa and the Middle East you need a carnet de passage, you buy this from your local motoring organization. They guarantee you will not sell the bike in that country. This will cost about 1500 English pounds but 50% of that is returnable when the bike is back in Europe. You can’t do this trip without one; borders will not allow you to enter the country.

You will need to give me a deposit of 3000 English pounds this covers the loss of my carnet if you do not return the bike and the loss of the bike. If the bike is returned in good condition within a year of handing it over I will give 1500 English pounds back, major damage will have to be taken out of this deposit i.e. smashed fairings etc.

The bike will need to be serviced – oil change, water change, suspension, wheels etc but we could do this together. Also some spare parts will need to be bought, spare sprocket and chain etc.

The bike comes with a full set of panniers and tank bag that you can use on your trip. I can help with planning through most of East and West Africa, give you tents, books, maps etc. I can also be the support from Europe if you have problems, easier to have somebody to know what to send than trying to do it yourself from afar.

My trip has gone from London through Cape Town, including Iraq, but there are many routes. It has cost less than 7000 English pounds for a 6 month trip.

There is no negotiation on this but please contact me with any questions. I will need an answer relatively quickly as I need to organize shipping if no interest.

You´d better ship your bike from Port Elizabeth to Vigo, Spain. There is a ro-ro boat. I did it with my bike and was about 1200 euros. 15 days and no worries. Easy bussiness. Then you ride your own bike to Santander, take the ferry to Plymouth and you are back home. I can help. If you need place to keep your bike safe I know people. But if you want someone who gives you 3000 sterling pounds for a GS 650 Dakar 2001 which has rode all the way from UK to ZA, it will be a hard deal. Good luck anyway.

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
