Belize to Guatemala City

Is there a road suitable for a Sabre 1100 from Belize City to Guatemala City? Trying to avoid backtracking the Yucatan.

Hi,

The road from Belize city to the border with Guatemala is paved, but then the first 20km in Guatemala are unpaved, hardpacked gravel with some walnut sized stones thrown into the mix. I don't know how comfortable you would be on such a road with your bike.
After these 20km, the road is paved all the way to Guatemala city, going south of Lake Izabal (there is a northern road, but only 20km are paved).
I don't know your bike and thus cannot judge if the unpaved section is suitable. There is no other paved option (for now) from Belize.

Thanks for the information. I received an email from someone in Guatemala recommending a detour after Melchor de mencos on the dirt road to Yazha. They recommended the lodge El sombrero as a great place to stay on the shore of Lake Yaxha and wonderful Maya ruins to visit.

Wow, that stretch wasn't paved back in December 2001 either. When we did it the stones were larger that fist sized and it beat our van pretty bad. Back then it would have been passable at about 40km/h. If you keep your head up you'll make it without bottoming out. Everybody was going slow on the stretch so you won't be a sitting duck if you decide to take it.

we are in belize and about to do the 20kl dirt stretch, the news from people travelling the other way is that it is rough with deep ruts and thick mud, there has been a lot of rain recently, hopefully it may be better when it dries out but it isn't looking good for a sabre

to update my last post, just crossed the road, it has dried up considerably, still rough but passable
