Across Africa North to South and across South America South to North.

I am a single 28 year old American male and I will be starting a year long motorcycle ride approximately July or August 2011. I will be starting in Germany, however quickly proceeding to Italy and catching a ferry to Tunisia, then East across Libya, into Egypt, South to Sudan, and what comes next is yet to be determined. I am still in the initial planning phases. I currently ride a 2007 BMW R1200GS Adventure, however I am considering switching to something lighter for the trip. I am a pretty relaxed traveller and I do not want to rush this. I plan to allocate 5 months to Africa and 7 months to South America. The only timeline requirements I have are the departure in July/August, arrival in Terra del Fuego before the weather shuts it off, and an arrival in North America by late august 2012

I am a bit of an introvert so do not expect much company, I would do the trip alone, but I am hoping to limit some of the dangers by travelling with a group. I speak English, basic conversational German, and limited Spanish, but I am learning more Spanish right now. I am a reasonable cook, a decent mechanic, and I have advanced first aid skills. I am an adventurous person and I would like to experience these places as fully as possible. This will be my first trip to Africa, however I spent a few months in South America before. My longest motorcycle trip to date has been a one month trip around Croatia, Bosnia, Montenegro, Albania, Macedonia, and Kosovo.

I do not mind which type of vehicle you have, as long as you can make the trip I would be glad to travel with you.

My email is redlinemike1982@yahoo.com or if you find yourself near Nurnberg, Germany let me know and we can meet up to discuss this.

Michael

You need to communicate with Robx2

Michael,

I can answer most of your questions concerning Peru, Brazil and Bolivia, but Rob and Rob (who are doing your exact route, only backwards) on BMWs. They began on 10-10-10 in the USA and are presently in southern Argentina.

Their website is:The Big Adventure ... six months, four continents, two motorcycles

Cheers, Toby

Hey Michael,

Nice plan you have! I'll be goning for a transafrican solo trip, north to south. Egypt, sudan, ethiopia, kenia,... to south africa. I'll leave Belgium ,where I live, in september/october. Maybe we can meet up somewhere in north africa and travel some miles together. Like to travel with others for the same reason as you i guess.

Zjwannie, I might be stuck working a little longer than planned and not departing until around October. Any more details on your itinerary?

Edit: given the current situations in Egypt and Tunisia I think I am going to shift my plan to just South America. On the off chance things completely change I might go back to the original route; however, I do not see that happening.

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
