battelfields in europe WW1

looking to visit some WW1 sites around n/france/belgium etc,intending to go towards end of may but very flexible in time frame. Is there any one doing this sort of trip soon ..

I'm planning to get down there sometime soon. As I live in belgium I need to go down to recce out some routes and look around ahead of a pending visit by my father in law in July.
There's a wealth of info on the UKGSER.com website :
Battlefields & Military Interest - ::. UKGS'er.com .::

Don't know if you have a Garmin GPS , if you do I have a load of points of interest waypoints you may find useful. I didn't put these together myself but full credit to those that did - this is a remarkable bit of research that allows a Garmin GPS to take you all over the Ypres and Somme battlefields. Send me a PM with your email address and I can email them to you.

No good to anyone that doesn't have a Garmin GPS I'm afraid - you won't be able to view the file but I could send an Excel file with the LAT/LONG positions - to give you and idea there are 266 points just around Ypres and 242 around the Somme - most of these are memorials or significant battlefield points of interest.

Ypres is a very good base to tour the British/Belgian locations. Verdun is a very good base and is close to forts etc. as they "stood" in 1918. If you have an interest in the second world war, you are also close to the Ardennes which has some decent roads and points of interest.

Can the Garmin POI's be converted to view in Google Earth? If not, could you send me the Excel file by email and I'll make a POI set for TomTom. Much appreciated :thumbup1:

The Last Post

The last Post is a must, every evening in the city of Ypres at the Menin Gate at 7.45pm. The last post is for every fallen man without a grave. Very moving !! Also the city museum in Ypres is excellent. Try to stay at Talbot house (www.talbothouse.be)..... Also look at the German war graves, very interesting contrast …

Other information; Sanctuary Wood, Tyne Cot Cemetery, Passchendaele or here’s a link Wereldoorlog I in de Westhoek - The Great War in Flanders Fields

We shall never forget !

Before Endeavours Fade

This book is a good guide, that has stood the test of time and it is now updated I see:-

The book was published before the WWW became commonly available.

I did this in 2003 and its a very humbling experience.

I visited a lot of the graveyards too and they can stretch on for what seems like miles. The inscriptions are sad when they read things like

"Unamed soldier, 14 years old, RIP"
