Hi, I will only be in Bangkok around Mid March and would like to fly to Nepal myself. Any luck with shipping agents? i was given a contact, i'll try to post it to you. When are u leaving Bangkok?

Mark Smith 11 Feb 2003 05:35

I have mentioned before regarding the present situation in Nepal - please be very aware of the current political situation - the Maosit uprising seems to be developing a higher state, with many Assasinations and Marshall law being imposed in Kathmandu and other parts of the country - please check with your Embassies or foreign affairs departments before going. Perhaps a later time would be best to visit Nepal

Dalbir 11 Feb 2003 22:22

Thanks for the feedback Mark. I will try to find out more. By the way, finding an agent who will arrange my bike to fly from Bangkok to Nepal seems a little difficult. Most that i have emailed to, dont offer the service anymore, usually stressing that it is very messy and increasingly more difficult to do.
Anyways Doris, are u still in bangkok? Any info on shipping to Nepal or India?

Hiya Dalbir

Just thought i would let you know i am currently in Kathmandu and it is very nice, relaxed, full of western tourists and quite safe. Marshall Law! technically dont know about that, but i do know that there is currently a cease fire in place between the government and the maoists, however, even before this, tourist were never targeted anyway. There is ususaly some form of terror organisation in any country you visit, be it Nepal, India, Pakistan or the UK!

As a point of interest i will be flying me and the bike to Bangkok in about a week, if you want to meet for a coffee/beer etc, give me a shout.

Hi ktm ;

Have been following your posts for sometime now, since you are ahead of me and got the latest first hand news.
Were you able to find 15-50 oil in India&Pakistan or Nepal?

Great news about Nepal. Was worried for a second.

Happy Trails ,

Billy Bunter 13 Feb 2003 14:00

Hiya

Dont know about Nepal cos i havent tried although after getting the oil in Pakistan and India i suspect you can cos there is actually a greater variety of bikes here. The other important thing to bear in mind for KTM's is that it has to be fully symthetic oil with an SG/SH minimum rating.

Well you can get it but it take some searching out as it is not that widely available and is expensive when you do. Sorry, didnt keep a not of exact cost, but it was expensive. I got some in Quetta Pakistan and then down in Goa. I suspect if you were actually in Mumbai it would probably be quite a bit easier than it was in Goa.

As a point of interest i found a great mechanic down in goa who knows his way around modern bikes, even had experience of my KTM. I will post his details to "repair shops" as well.

Thanks DORIS, i will speak to him. Are u still in bangkok or now in Nepal, Anyways i will catch up with you soon.

WILL, im still in Singapore, if you are coming this way, let me know. Thanks for the info on Nepal.

RALF, it would be great to hear from you about freight information. Looks like i will be in Bangkok mid March, having problems with my home made panniers which seems too heavy and reaches too close to the ground for comfort.

My Myanmar application is in process and there seems only a very very slim chance. Nevertheless as stubborn as i am, im still waiting for a reply. The application was sent to the local Myanmar embassy in Singapore who have forwarded it to the ministry in Myanmar itself. The chancellor here, is quite helpful and has said he'd do what he can. But stilll a very slim chance. Their worry is whether i will be passing any sensitive areas. My outlined route is Mae Sai to Kentung, Mektila, Mandalay, Sagaing, Shwebo, Kin U to Pyingaing.
Anyways from the Chancellor here, my chances are slim because of 2 factors.
1)Route could be sensitive areas (from what i have checked, the route mentioned is not as sensitive as other parts with rebels fighting. In fact trouble is more on the thai/Myanmar borders areas down south.
2)Because i will be travelling alone on a bike.
As for motorcycling cant help it, but if there are worried about me being alone... am sure ill find others who might like to do the trip around Myanmar.
Anyways i will wait awhile more and see.

Cheers
Dalbir
