Talking Australia to London

Hi Everyone

What a wonderful site...we met someone in central Australia who was just starting their trip to Spain who told us about this site....anyway...
We (myself and my wife) are planning to travel form Australia to London in 2008. We haven't decided on an exact date yet, but think it will be around July/August. We will be travelling in a 4x4, but would love to meet up and possibly share our experience with anyone considering the same thing, whether you are travelling on a bike or 4x4.

We kinda have an idea of the route, but we are in very early stages of planning. We want to see if we can ship to China to start there, going to Mongolia and then south to Vietnam, Cambodia etc etc before heading west to the 'Stans', Nepal, Tibet and India and all those nice places before heading further west through possibly Iran (depending what the situation is there with cowboy Bush and Co) to Europe and finally London.

So let us kow if you are considering something similar, and who knows what will happen.

Cheers
Pumbaa

Paths Crossing

Hi there Pumbaa,

We are heading in the opposite direction, but not until April 2009. Depending on how slowly you travel we might meet when your 3/4 the way there. You can see some of the details of our trip on our (not yet completed) website.

Might be worth speakig with Chris of NSW, who is planning a similar trip, although a slightly different route. I'll give him a nudge.

Cheers

Hi Chris

Thanks, got your pm, but it won't allow me to pm before I've made 8 postings...would definitely like to share info etc and try to work out how some of the red tape works.
I'm also still trying to convince some of our friends who travelled with us through Cape York to join us on this expedition...

Pumbaa,

Have you checked out the meeting at Tintaldra next weekend, I understand there may be just one or two places left. In blue writing at the top of this page.

Pumbaa,

Look you are up to 3 Posts already, you'll get there in no time. Just tell me about some of your recent trips and your truck, spread it over a few Posts and you will have 8.

Yes, I've seen it, but unfortunately we can't make it. I'm hoping there will be another one before we go. How far are you in your planning stages, and do you have any set route you had in mind?

Overland plans

Pumbaa,

I have been seriously working towards the end for about 6 months, have the truck well set up, say 90% there, am toying with route options but am currently exploring Vladivostok to Moscow and Europe, not sure about return though. Am currently taking Russian tutorial each week, am clearing the decks for some time off.

What about you?

Chris

Tintaldra

Pumbaa,

Sorry you will be busy and miss the meeting, I don't think there will be another one for a year or so. I will take some notes for you. What questions should I ask for you?

:confused1: What questions...wow...where do I start. It will probably be similar thing to what you would want to know.

My main concerns at the moment is entry to China probably and from reading some posts, this could be quite involved. The other thing is probably re maps for places like inner China and Mongolia. There are so many because we are in the early stages, and I have only managed to read a few posts on the boards...
One thing that would interest me though is re the NSW RTA and how they would deal with taking a 4x4 out the country for longer than 12 months. We will probably eventually import it to the UK (I've already made some contact with some of the authorities there and it doesn't seem to be such a big thing yet...)

What fourby are you using and why did you decide on it. We currently have a Lux, but will probably go for a Troopy because there should be enough space inside to make a comfortable home and it is as hard as nails.

Oh my golly

Oh - now that I know that someone is looking at our website I should tidy it up and do some updates! I've been a bit slack recently, tied up with all the other details. Anyway, thats off topic!

Are you getting a website togther? It is a great way to keep in touch and can be as easy or as hard as you want it to be.

As for China, well I'm hoping, but not relying on, the Olympics making it easier to enter. If not, I am budgeting for the cost and hassle of a guide.

There seem to be lots of places to get maps, both paper and electronic. I've not used any yet, but here are some of the ones that I've saved...

ITMB PRESS RELEASE - Mongolia Map 2006

china northwest
Maps catalogue
http://www.2ridetheworld.com/wanderlust_page.htm
http://www.topomaps.eu
http://poehali.org/en/maps.html

I hope these help and don't confuse the issue too much

Cheers
