australia to england via russia 2011

Hey guys,i am thinking of doing the big trip about mid-late april 2011,east russia, mongolia, kazicstan, ukraine, romania and so on. would be interested to find like minded souls going the same way about the same time.I am 50 years old done the riding thing for 30 years, off road and on road, work as a motorcycle courier, so long days in the saddle don't worry me much. Bike of choice is DR650 2005. my basic plan is to ship bike to japan or korea then ferry to russia and then just go with the flow,i want to be in europe by late june early july to catch up on some moto gp's and superbike meetings, and i plan to take 6-7 months so i can get back to oz before it gets too cold. any one interested give me a bell,i am even willing to travel with yanks (ha ha)

Silk Road trip

Hi Ninja97,
I just came back from an Australian outback trip on my BMW F800GS. Did 9000kms in 4 weeks. So my bike is fully setup for an extended trip. I am looking around for another trip next year. Quite interested in travelling the silk road. May be I can join you in part of your way. Only starting to do the research. I am in similar age and live in Melbourne.

Spoken like a real Aussie!!

Would love to but I can't next year. If you ride by Switzerland on your way through Europe drop me a PM, you'll be welcome to crash and I'll show you a few nice roads.

Me too.

OK, Me too.

I have a DR650 preped for a Siberia to the West trip too. Planing like tthis.

fly bike to Seoul from Melb, Korean Air gave me quote of $4.95 per Kg air freight. Shenkers said about $25- $250 for good handling and cargo (they need bike for one week).

Mid May (Mon 9th or 16th) bike flys to Seoul, I hope to fily out day later, and collect bike.
Ride across to get to the ferry, to Vladivostok.
ride Vlad to Tynda, Yakutsk, ust Neda, Magadan, Magadan (maybe old summer rd, bepends if weather is OK, and if I can find a ride buddy), Yakutsk, Vilyuisk trakt, Irkutsk, UB mongolia, , russia, then into Stans Pamar Hwy, Back into russia, ferry across black sea to Turkey & westen Europe.

About to start to get LOI sorted out, I have some long servie leave sort'a booked. But need to firm up my dates. I hope to have 5 motns plus a bit.

:oops2:, the Dangrous good handling quote from schenkers was $425 - $450. not what I mistakenly typed...

Silk Road trip

Hi Stephen,
Sound like you are quite advance in your planning on your trip. My dates are quite flexible at the moment. I need to catch up on my research. Do you have any route map out? My outback trip was map out in Google map. See link:
Outback trip - Google Maps

Setup a map like this would be handy. Do you have any useful links for research?

Andrew

Andrew, I'm in Melbourne, in my mid 50s and did that trip 2 years ago - see - Across the universe

Drop me a PM re any questions /thoughts / suggestions and I'm also happy to catch up over a beer or two.

shdashley 11 Nov 2010 08:22

a map!! well that a novel idea ... ;)

I'll have a go at getting a map sorted.

Quite a bit of info Walter Colebatch has on his blogs eg :0-
Sibirsky Extreme
Also other good sites like :-
2010 Motorcycle Adventure Season on the Road of Bones, Yakutia/Siberia | AskYakutia.com

So if you have not yet seen these there are good to use to get a feel for what road condition 'might' be like. Of course all this can change quickly...

More to look and read, -
Siberian Extreme 2010 - Back for More - ADVrider

Road of Bones Expedition Photos London to Sochi, Russia through the Stans' - ADVrider (tried to get on this ride this year but work got in the way...)

Donkey and the Mule - Home

cheers,
stephen.

a map ?

I hope this is the map link.

This is the basic outline for the trip I plan to under take in 2011. Basically use work that others have already done. Which is fine be me.

Hi Garry,
Still trying to work out how to send you a PM with my details on it. May be you can point the way?
Anyway I had a quick read on your Blog. We missed each others by one day! I stayed at Birdsville Hotel for 3 nights. They had a big 30th years reunion that weekend with what seem like 100 people around. I left on the morning of 25th October and headed for Innamincka. ( I travelled reverse direction from my plan as some traacks were still closed when I left Melbourne). Definately need to catch up! Andrew

Hi Stephen,
Thanks for the map and the links. I will spend some time going through them. Sorry, I didn't mean to get you to do all the extra work on the map. I found it very useful in my planning as Google map can link them all up, and give you the exact distance for each section of the ride. Very useful in my planning for my outback trip. I have come across a website from a group of Finnish riders who map out their trip from Finland to Mongolia and back:
4. THIA SHAN & PAMIR MOUNTAINS - FIN2PAMIR
It has lots of information whick I am still trying to go through. Have you thought about riding through Northern China instead of through South Korea / Russia. My initial idea was to ship bike to either Hong Kong or Shanghai, then ride up to Northern China / Mongolia. The film Couching Tiger Hidden Dragon has inspired me about that region. But I have not done any research as to whether or not that is feasible. May be your route is more interesting? Andrew

Hi Channey,

am planning for a round-the-Australia trip to start early in Jan / Feb. Would you have any kind of a blog or hints in one place regarding this particular part of the World?

Thanks a lot
Kuba

Hi Kuba,
This is a wide open question! Jan/Feb is in the middle of our summer, and it is hot everywhere in Australia. It is also the monsoon season in the tropical north Queensland, and it is definitely not the right time to travel to outback Australia. I would recommend you to stay around the coastal area - at least you can jump into the sea to cool down. If you are into the major tourist spots, then I suggest you visit your local travel agent, and pickup a few brochures on Australia. Find the area that you are interested in, then google them. There is huge amount of information on Australia. If you are interested in Outback Australia, I find the following site very informative:
4WDing, Camping & Caravanning around Australia
Hope this will help.
Andrew

Kuba - [I hope I'm not butting-in here] but amongst other great blog stories right here on HU (and other sites around the Net), I suggest you take a look through Rick McDermed's 2008 story - LINKY - I learned a lot about riding around Aus through Rick's eyes. There's also some really excellent info over on the Ride Reports and Australian Region forums of ADVrider.com.

Good luck with your planning.

KEITH
