Arizona to Ushuaia

Hi all...I'll be heading south on November 30th (possibly november 29th) at Nogales. Am planning on first night at Los Mochis, and then the second night in Guadalajara area, and the third night in Leon. I'll be staying in Leon/Guanajuato are for a few days.

It would be great to ride with someone for the first few days southward...

Heading South

Don't know where you are now, but I'm in Guatemala now.

Have finally left and I am now in Guatemala and happy to be out of Mexico. The first part of traveling in Mexico was fine and I didn't get killed nor robbed. I had to pay $448 just to bring my motorcycle in. This is to prevent the entry and sale of vehicles. But, I ended up only getting back $400, so I was paying $6/day just to be there. I fell and sprained my ankle in Mazatlan on very deep gravel. I had a horrible time getting through Mexico City, including having a very difficult time changing money there. The last straw was having to spend three hours leaving Mexico. I hope I never have to return there. There are many beautiful places there and some very nice people, but the bureaucracy is awful.

My entry into Guatemala was fantastic. The officials were very efficient and went out of their way to be helpful. The hotel I'm in is decent, but the staff are as helpful and friendly as one could wish. I even got the cook, Doña Flor, to make Gallo Pinto, essentially rice and beans mixed with spices like cilantro.

I expect to be into El Salvador within a day or two. Then Honduras for a day or less. Then Nicaragua, where a friend is waiting for me. Then I plan to visit family and friends in Costa Rica. Then Panama, Columbia, Ecuador, Peru, Argentina, maybe Bolivia, Brazil, and ???

I also lost my smart phone in Mexico and don't have phone numbers, and misplaced my camera before I left. Duh

Entered Nicaragua after a miserable time in Honduras. Cost about $35 to ride the bike through in one day and over 30 copies had to be made. That´s a new record in the 70 countries that I´ve visited or lived in. I hope to be in Costa Rica today, if the cops don´t stop me four times in one day like they did last year!

Write to me when you are in this area. I will visit friends and family in CR, and may take some Spanish courses to improve my Spanish. I would like to get to South America before Xmas.

Have you arranged how you will get the bike from Panama yet? I haven´t done so yet, but used air freight last times.

Peru!

I will be in Peru mid Jan 13th (to catch the DAKAR arriving in my "home country" to mid Feb. I'll be in Lima, north in the Cajamarca area (if you are driving down thru central Ecuador), and east in Huanuco and Pucallpa.

I would love to meet up and I can tell you almost everything about all of Peru.

Am now in Panama and hope to get air freight to Colombia in a couple days and be on the beach in Ecuador shortly thereafter. Will then head down to catch the last stage(s) of Dakar rally.

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive.
