2013 Stella Alpina

Hi all,

I'm taking a long weekend trip down to Italy in July to do the Stella Alpina, highlight of the event for many is the Sunday morning ride up the largely unsurfaced track to the (9872ft elevation) Colle del Sommeiller.

Leaving Dover on Thursday 11th July, stopping at a campsite in Dole france to visit family, then continuing to Bardonneccia on Saturday 13th ready for ride up pass on Sunday morning. Returning to Dole Monday, then back to ferry on Tuesday 16th.

Calais-Dole 377 miles. Dole-Bardonneccia 245miles. It's possible to do the trip in one go I suppose but as I have accommodation available en-route it makes sense to use it and also avoid to many motorways.

If anyone wants to join me for the whole or part of the journey, or just want to meet up there and share some then you're most welcome.

Stella pictures from years gone by

The best single description I have found online about the Stella Alpina is this website:-
Stella Alpina Motociclistica Internazionale
First written up when folks did it for the fun of it, rather than wanting to get their 15 minutes of fame in a magazine.

Within there is a description of how it started and at least one picture of the guy who started it.

Hi Gaia, yes still interested in company for this trip. Got lots of feedback on another forum too so know there are lots of people to meet up with down there too.

Unfortunately for me I'm restricted to the timetable above for this trip, although I may go back and do some of the other trails in the area later in the year.

Interesting! There was more snow in 2012 than 2011 and I would think there will be a lot this year if the snow reports for the Alpine ski resorts are representative.
Note that the date for this year coincides with the "biggy day" for the French, so Briancon will be jumping on that Sunday.

Thumbs up

Hi all,

The first Stella Alpina Android App is ready.
Movies, stories, waypoints, info about the mountains, campgrounds and more in one App.

If you have a Android phone/tablet search for "Stella Alpina" in the Play-store/App-store.

Enjoy!
