Santiago

I'm in Santiago until Monday ?
But I think I'm heading north or west...too cold and windy and rainy in the south now.

Hi James, they told me the same about the south, rainy and windy, still I will try to get to Ushuaia, not neccesarily through Ruta 40...as I am not very skilled in gravel...right now I am in San Pedro de Atacma and tomorrow will go to Salta...if you plan to cross to Argetina may be we can meet.
Saludos,
Fernando

Weren't you planning to ride by some mysterious, hitherto unknown route, into Aguas Calientes? How'd that go?

well I did that actually, with Steve aka Pockettumbleweed. He did all the planning, having arrived in Cusco some days before me. It was a good ride but with some roads/bridges out we just made it to Santa Theresa. Then you have to get yourself to the cablecar and pull yourself across the river, and then hike 4 km to the hydroelectric plant where the rail lies, then catch a train or walk 8 km. to Aquas Caliente.. It was great. Steve did some hill climbing so talk to him directly about that. I am now in Puno and he was heading north towards Colombia.

Thanks. That's the same old back route, then; nothing new. I wondered about this after John ("Southbound") wrote that there was an actual road into Aguas Calientes, with echoes from various other people. But the road/walk/and-or-train via Santa Theresa is well-known. I opted out of the walk, but rode most of the route just for fun, then backtracked and took the train with my fellow sheep.

enjoy,

Mark
