Hiya,

Sorry- I'll be about a week behind you. I'm in Cairo right now and am supposed to get my Sudanese visa tomorrow. After that I'll take my time getting down to Aswan and take the one after you.

All the best and safe travels!

The passenger ferry leaves on Monday from Aswan and Wednesday from Wadi Halfa. I don't think there are times, it just leaves when it leaves. People advise getting there early (8 or 9am) to get all the paperwork sorted.

As for the vehicle ferry, I think it just goes whenever there is enough stuff to make it full. Form another thread:

"Don what truck are you taking on the Wadi Halfa-Aswan barge? How big (length, axle weight etc).

Sorry to tell you but it is considerabely more than 50usd for a truck! It takes nearly 2-3 days to cross if fully laden and waters are choppy.

If there is nobody else around to share the barge you will have to charter it, and its not cheap. If youre not prepared to charter the barge, make sure you know other vehicle owners who want to cross at the same time as you, or you might have to wait around for a few days for tohers to turn up.".

^ That quote I wrote on another thread.

If you want the barge it is REALLY worth your while contacting Mazar/Midhat in advance. They're the boys, will sort absolutely everything out for you in Wadi Halfa. Yeah you gotta pay them a fee, but it aint so much and boy it makes your life so much easier (if you can speak arabic you might get by on your own).

Basically by just turning up for the barge is a little risky. You could get there and it be full, therefore you'll wait a number of days. You could get there and there is nobody else to share with you......option is therefore to charter the barge (expensive), or wait until others do turn up to share the cost.

I understand they no longer let you sail with your vehicle on the barge? I managed it once but have been told since they wont let you.

Last number I had for Midhat (he is in Khartoum and runs the agency) was +249 912253484, email: midhat.sudan@gmail.com

For Mizur (Midhats brother or nephew?) (perhaps spelt Mazar?, he is in Wadi Halfa) I had 2 numbers:

+24 9122380740, +24 9122181886

I also have Magdy Boshara details (he is in Wadi Halfa) but I never used him. Seems like a nice guy though:

+24 9121730885 or email nubatia51@yaoo.com

Great stuff Dave! I've been looking everywhere for contacts for this ferry trip. I had resigned to the idea of showing up and hoping for the best... but this is much better!

We'll be going Aswan -> Wadi Halfa though. Do you think they can help us out still?

There is a guy in Aswan called "Mahmoudris"....I think he is another Mohammed but thats what he likes to be called. He is actually Sudanese, and is somehow related to Midhat and Mazar/Mizur.

He is a great guy. Really helpful, and knows how to deal with the ASS HOLES at Aswan port (and believe me, these guys can be REAL beligerant ass holes).

He has a driver with his own car called KAMAL......very funny guy, always seems pissed when driving you at 100mph to and from office to office to get all the various bits of paper in order.

He charges 40usd for the day. This includes the use of Kamal and his car to run you all over the place to get all the stamps on lots of different forms. (Aswan port is approx 20minutes drive from the town where alot of the paperwork for the vehicle is done). If you dont speak arabic Im telling you it will take you alot longer to get a vehicle into Egypt from Sudan with regards all the beaurocracy. But as you are leaving egypt it might be somewhat easier.

The last number I had for Mahmoudris was 0106845201 (you need to add egyptian code to the front and loose the 0 probably). If you contact Midhat Im sure he has Mahmoudris' latest details.

Hope this helps.

The only problem I see with making this information a sticky is that everybody will prob use Midhat! I have to say he is great and realy helpful, but it would be a shame if he got a monopoly on helping travellers through this process and others couldnt make any business.

Having spoken to Kamal and the manager at the Philae hotel in Aswan, they told me in 2008 that there was only 18kms left to pave of the new road that will in effect connct Aswan to Wadi Halfa (could be wrong but thats what i was told). When this road is complete, it could spell then end of the laborious task that is the Aswan-Wadi Halfa ferry/barge. Well, that is if they open the road to foreigners. I knew in years gone by that the road between Port Sudan and Egypt along the coast was closed to foreigners due to smuggling/bandits (is that still the case?)

Wow, if this road does open, and when the Kenyans pave the Moyale-Archers Post road, and the Etiopians complete the road from Gondar to Sudanese border, you'll be able to drive from Cairo to Cape Town on all tarmac.

Yeah, the original vision of Rhodes... the Pan-African Highway. More boringly called Trans-Africa Highway 4 now. I think central Tanzania will need some sealing as well.

But yeah, good call about using only one fixer, that could turn bad. Would be great if this road opened from Aswan to Wadi Halfa... but I'm not holding my breath. With Midhat, I sent my email from a Yahoo account. A little worried it might go to spam on his end. Is he usually a man who replies quickly or should I just give it a few days?
