Any interesting places to visit in France
 

Traveling around France for two weeks setting off this Tuesday..but really have no destination and no ideas as to where or what is worth seeing..? this may sound strange for me to say as i have traveled through France countless times to get to places ie. Africa,Morroco, Italy, albania,Turky etc. etc. .. so if anyone is in or passing through and want to meet up for beer food etc.... i will check up on any posting as i go via internet cafes and so on.
will be doing a bit of camping and Formula's etc..looking for bike rallies or just noising around......Look forward to here from any one....Cheers.....Mark?c?

Mont St. Michel in Normandy is an amazing place. I hope you're fit it's a bit of a walk to the top.

+1 for Mont St Michel, best of the lot is to arrive mid/late afternoon when the tourist buses are on their way out, and things are much quieter. Stroll round the place and then as the sun starts setting head back out onto the causeway and settle down to watch the lights come on.

There's campsites nearby,in Pontourson, and a YHA but they're not the cheapest, and very set up for caravans/campers, but hey for one night it's worth it.

BUT just looked at the weather forecast and for the next ten days or so It looks like rain in the north and showers in the south, so maybe best to blast down south as quick as possible, check out the Millau viaduct, maybe the Pyrennees, have a paddle in the Med, chase after Cathars, and relax, then wind your way back up the Atlantic coast, Angouleme can be interesting, Bordeaux of course, then up to the Loire, into Brittany, then MSM and then home.

Or just find a quaint village and take up residence at the bar for a week.

My favourite places in France (I lived there for seven years); take your pick:

Perros Guirec, Brittany - Stay at the Au Bon Accueil hotel and if you like seafood, eat in their restaurant across the road
St Emillion - very cool place
Rocamadour, Vallee du Lot - there's a decent auberge in Gramat called the Lion d'Or with particularly good food
Najac - quite the best old ruin in a beautiful setting in the middle of 'duck' and roquefort country
Cevennes National Park - good off-roading
St Remy de Provence - go on a Wednesday, it's market day
Route des Grandes Alpes
Beaune - delightful place and the home of boeuf bourguignon
Alsace - perfect time of year to visit, just after the grape harvest; Turckheim, Riquewihr (a must), Colmar, Strasbourg, Chateau Haut-Koenigsbourg etc. Great food, good wine; eat local specialities like flammenkusche or pork with a rich mushroom sauce, drink tokai and pinot noir ... OMG I miss it!
La Rochelle and the Isle de Ré - I've never been but am told by French friends that it's great
Paris - shout if you want recommendations where to eat etc.

Okay, it's a culinary guide but hey, it's France! Enjoy your ride!

Oradour-sur-Glane has the old town which is an untouched town destroyed by the Nazis in WW2. 642 villagers were killed and the town was left exactly as it was after the destruction. The town is near Limoges and the area has other places to visit - volcanic region, caves etc.

hi,route des grandes alpes is a wonderful trip in the alpes (maby my favorit)! but you should check if the highest streets (egg col de'l iseran) are already closed for the winter season. and also if they are not, you should be prepared for snow and low temperatures.

I m currently staying in the french catalan Pyrenees, 70 km south east from Perpignan, relaxing before my motorcycle trip in Argentina. The place is right on the border with Spain, with direct views to high mountains and the mediterranean.

You are welcome to visit if you are in the area. I advise you the road in Spain to get there, which looks like a highway with nice curbs in the middle of a natural reserve.

+1 for Oradour Sur Glane. Very haunting and poignant.

I'd recommend taking the road from Meymac to Rodez via Aurillac (D920), fantastic roads, twisting and empty! In fact the Massif Centrale in general is brilliant)

Toulouse is a great town, and the region to the South East is great (Foix, Mirepoix and Andorra - for the Pyrenean roads) and the food's great - a big bowl of Cassoulet (preferably in either Toulouse, Carcasonne or Castelnaudry) and bottle of Cahors will sort you after the longest day in the saddle!

The Millau bridge is worth seeing, as is Gorge du Tarn (great roads), heading further east Avignon is a great town (if you like a bit of culture), and the Verdon gorge is amazing (great roads and views)

Anyway, just my 2-cents worth....

Lots and lots of great places especially around the lumpy bits, trouble is the place is full of bloody French. Ride safe.

The volcanic region.

Le Puis de Dome south of Clermont Ferrand is the core of an extinct volcano.

You can ride up it, just like going up a helter skelter.
At certain times cars are not allowed, just motorbikes and coaches.

I'd give my vote for Il De Re, The only downside is it cost about 16 euro to cross onto the island via the bridge, you don't have to pay to come back. I would also suggest going as far into the island as poss to camp. Great seafood, and locally grown mussels. Once there use a mountain bike to get around, you can hire them everywhere.

I would also recommend the Loire valley, Loches is a lobely town as is Chinon, with it's rebuild chateu

Just a quick one to thank every one who wrote with advise just got back home.
its a shame i couldnt read most of the replys not many internet cafes that happened my way and the ones that did cost to much and not enough time to brouse through, I did find it difficult to trace my listing and the load up time was pretty slow...the rain in France drove me into sunny Spain and Portugal as it happened....Thanks again
