Anchorage to Tierra del Fuego and Beyond? July 2009

Hi
After 30 years as a UK Firefighter I need some excitement, my wife Sue, will be taking a break from psychiatric nursing (or maybe not!) and we are planning to travel from Alaska to BA via TDF. Leaving July 2009 we hope to be on the road for around 6-8 months, we wan't to see as much as possible and meet as many like minded folk as we can. We have a rough idea of a route but nothing set in stone, the trouble is every time I start to plan or investigate one area of the trip using the HUBB I kinda get sidetracked by all the superb information. This site and the people who subscribe are amazing, so where was I? yeh, sorry, anyone on the road next year going down or up we hope to see you on our travels.

Graham & Sue

p.s. Any help/advice greatly appreciated!

Welcome Graham and Sue. I will be traveling to Alaska in July of 2009 from western Kentucky. I'm still in the planning stages as of now, but keep checking in from time to time. I'm sure there will be lot of folks heading that way next summer.

1200?

Graham and Sue,

Will you be on the 1200? That may limit your options somewhat, but I still recommend getting off the Panamericana when you can. Lots to see, but not much of it is on the PA. Especially from southern Ecuador to northern Chile (booooooring.......:().

Any way I can help. I've lived MANY years in Mexico and Peru.... In fact I will be leading a group on a 5,000 km loop within Peru summer of 2009... :scooter::scooter::scooter:

Playing catchup?

Hi Oscar
Looks like you've got some way to go! we will leave Anchorage some time in July heading south and planned to do a similar west coast route to yours, now all of a sudden we've got people inviting us here, there and everywhere so we will be detouring a bit (Bill and Julie look forward to meeting you both). We figured on just seeing where things take us, so the chances are we will meet up somewhere on the road. Will keep you updated,
Stay upright!

Calling Tuzirix/Oisin

Hi Tuzirix, Oisin,
We are planning to leave Anchorage in July 09, haven't decided whether to go up to deadhorse just to come back down unless someone can convince me otherwise? figure on getting down to TDF for December/January all we know is we don't want to have to rush, but then how long have we got after Dec/Jan before the weather gets rough down south? Would really like to meet up and share some miles at some point, in terms of experience Sue and I are true novices with a capital N in bold and underlined! our first experience of anything like long distance will be in 3 weeks time when we do Switzerland/Italy we'll let you know how it goes. We can't believe how friendly everyone on the HUBB is, just hope we can be as helpful in the future. Just out of interest Oisin where are you shipping to?

You need to do it

My vote is to go to Deadhorse when you are in Alaska. At some point you will kick yourself and say now I need to do that last part and it will be very expensive to go back to do that part. It is a day to Fairbanks, a long day to Deadhorse and a 2 days back. Trust me they are long days but it does not get dark so you can do it. I am 59 and I did it about 2 years ago. I met a guy in Deadhorse that rode his GS up from Fairbanks in one day and back in one day and he was 65. It also rained quite a bit of both of those days. He inspired me to do it as I was pretty shot and I thought if he can do it I should be able to do it. He was riding a GS and I was riding a Honda XR650L. I am just now sitting in my hotel room in Miami after flying back from Medellin Colombia today after finishing my Deadhorse to TDF trip in 4 different sections. Larry

Calgary-Inuvik-TDF

Hello all,

I am also planning a trip! I will be leaving Calgary, Alberta and heading up to the Canadian Arctic (Inuvik) and than back down through British Columbia, Vancouver Island and the West Coast of the USA, from there I have no plan except to head south! Sounds like there will be a few of us on the same route. Hopefully we can all keep in contact with planning etc.

Cheers.

The more the merrier!

:welcome: Hi Mitchel
Looks like there's going to be a few of us in that neck of the woods come 09', ssa2 (Larry) has convinced us not to miss Deadhorse (we knew we would come round eventually) so we'll be taking that route after leaving Anchorage, thanks Larry, and congratulations on finishing the trip!. because of the new route we may arrive earlier (June) and do the D2D although we don't have any dates on it. Given Sue and I are fairly new to biking our main aim is to meet as many fellow riders as possible (no better source of information and advice) so our itinery will need to be fairly flexible. Keep in touch, and we'll see you on the road.

Stay Upright!

Graham & Sue
