Americas 2002

I am seeking a companion for riding from the States through Central America and South America in August 2002. I plan on taking seven or eight months for the journey. I would rather not ride alone, so I am seeking like-minded individuals or groups to share the experience. I have a rough idea of what I want to do but I am also very flexible. Contact me if you're interested in joining up!

I completed a solo trip from Tex, USA to Panama(Yavisa) and back in early Mar, 2001. Took 80 days for 11,000 miles and loved it!! My point is that if you end up starting by yourself, don't hesitate. People are very friendly and you undoubtedly will meet people/other riders along the way. Personally, I can't wait to start the next leg of my trip(all of S. America). Adventure of a lifetime!!---PHW

You are right about travelling alone and meeting other travellers on the way. I have had similar experiences on non-MC adventures, and it is really a lot easier to meet and interact with locals and other travellers. However, for convenience sake on a trip like this it seemed to me that it would advisable to have a companion. I am hoping to combine the MC ride with plenty of trekking and exploring in remoter areas, such as the Tepuis in Venezuela or areas in Patagonia for example. Not having been there, I don't know what it's like, but I know that I wouldn't go on a longer trip in the wilderness here in the states, primarily for safety reasons. I also am hoping to get away from main roads and cover long distances on backroads where the going can be a bit rougher and if something should go wrong the assistance of a companion would be invaluable.

I'm also looking for company for a trip to S. America leaving Sept/Oct 2002 for 3-5 months. I'm a former paramedic, and will be taking spanish classes this next year to get prepared. Please email me if interested in any sort of discussion. Portland, Oregon.

Hi,

I plan on leaving for Central & South
America in October 2002. If you're in the
Washington D.C. area before then drop me
a line and I'll try to show you around. It
sounds like we may be travelling south at
the same time so maybe we can meet along
the road.

HughC

Hi HughC. Probably won't make it to DC but we should try to meet up on the way south. I'll shoot you an e-mail.

I'm planning on leaving NYC in late June, hitting Nova Scotia and Alaska, coming down to California by late August (and stopping at Burning Man) then going south from there to Argentina. I've been in Brazil 5 times, and Panama twice... I'm working on my (really poor) Spanish now.

In '98 I did a solo bicycle ride from NYC to Seattle... I agree, don't be afraid to go solo... on the other hand, there are times when you get stranded in the middle of nowhere when a traveling companion could be really helpful and prevent unnecessary adventures...

Sig Taylor 21 Jan 2002 20:34

Hi Arne,

I'm planning on riding my KLR from N. California to Mexico and Central/South America beginning at the end of August. I'd love to connect with you and anyone else with a similar plan. I'm Canadian and I'll be riding from Calgary, Alberta to Northern California in early August. I'm taking at course in California which finishes at the end of August. Let's keep in touch.

Sig

Sig Taylor 29 Jan 2002 20:32

Hi Arne,

I've delayed my trip and now plan to begin from Northern CA to Mexico and south in late August. I was planning on going in Jan as I've previously posted. I want to give Mexico (the Baja) a shot first and if that goes OK, perhaps continue on to Central and South America. I'm Canadian and I plan to be back in Calgary, Alberta at the beginning of November. Riding y2 KLR 650 with Happy Trails racks and Givi luggage. I'd be delighted to connect with anyone else interested in going.

Sig

Arne Bomblies 29 Jan 2002 23:25

Hi Sig,

Sounds like you'll be going a lot faster than I (we) will, as I plan on reaching Panama by the time you return to Calgary. I'll be in touch with you via e-mail.

Arne
