Alaska

I'm in New Zealand now and will continue to Australia next month. My flight back to USA is on June 4. I would like to leave for Alaska some in mid-to-late June. Want to stop briefly in BC to have my HID lights repaired.

I'm finding NZ MUCH more expensive than I expected. Hope I'll have enough money left by June to go to Alaska and would like to return to South America in the Fall of this year.

Hey Lowerider

I fly to Calgary on May 11th, head south, (grand Canyon etc) then North to Dawsons Creek, Alaskan highway, Klondike loop and up to Prudhoe. No definate dates just gonna go with the flow and take it all in. Sounds like there is plenty of riders in the area at that time. Planning on doing it all on the cheap so free camp as much as possible but im not keen on freezin me nuts off!
Hopefully see you all on the road for a beverage or 3

Alaska

Planning to leave from Los Angeles sometime in late June/early July. My thinking right now is to go to the Calgary Stampede, which is 8-17 July, then continue on to Alaska and stop by Vancouver on the way back south. Alternatively, I could go straight north to Prudhoe Bay, then to Calgary in time for the Stampede. I don't plan to be at Stampede for the whole time. I'm basing my planning on the following weather records:
Avg.High Avg.Low Avg.Precip
Calgary
June ]69.0 °F 45.0 °F 3.00 in
[July 74.0 °F 49.0 °F 2.80 in
Aug 73.0 °F 48.0 °F 1.90 in
Fairbanks
June 71.0 °F 47.0 °F 1.68 in
July 73.0 °F 50.0 °F 1.96 in
Aug 67.0 °F 45.0 °F 1.95 in
Prudhoe Bay
June 44.0 °F 31.0 °F 0.37 in
July 54.0 °F 37.0 °F 0.72 in
Aug 51.0 °F 36.0 °F 0.95 in

Any suggestions/recommendations?

If so, I'd like to join the ride.

I'm an experienced moto traveler (Western Canada, US, Alaska, Mexico & Central America). I usually ride solo, but I live in the north and I know that traveling solo to Prudhoe is not a good idea given the sparse population, rough roads and unpredictable, possibly extreme, weather conditions along the way.

Sooo, if you're making plans to go to Prudhoe this summer and wouldn't mind a riding partner, please contact me at: tsiyah@hotmail.com. You can also read about my travels so far at: Lowerider: Life's a Journey...Enjoy the Ride.
Hello everyone! Thank you all for responding and for sharing your great photos!! It sounds like you all have great journeys planned! Even if we can't travel together, it would be nice to meet up while you're in Fort Nelson, call me: 250-500-1782 if you're up for a drink.

I have confirmed my departure date: Leave Fort Nelson after work (4:30) on Friday August 12; head north to Muncho or Liard Hot Springs (4hrs) spend the night and then head to Prudhoe Bay! After Prudhoe, head south to Vancouver Island, either via the Alaska Marine Highway or the Cassier Hwy to Prince Rupert ferry then down to Victoria, BC. I'm parking the bike in Victoria and flying back to Fort Nelson; need to back at work Sept 6.

If this schedule works for you (and you don't mind traveling with chihuahua) please call me or email me at: tsiyah@hotmail.com.

ttys, Lana

Hopefully catch up with you all soon

Going North from Vancouver Island in a few days

Hi,

I'm in Victoria/Vancouver Island at the moment, visiting friends. This coming week (Tue/Wed), I'll leave the island and head up North – probably as fast as I can, with long riding days, but still trying to see a few things & take some "pretty piccys"
On the way back South from Prudhoe Bay via Jasper/Glacier NP, I'll take things a bit more relaxed give myself a bit more time. Maybe even do the Dempster, weather permitting.

I'd like to get up to Fairbanks ASAP – to have the option for some extended touring & exploring for a while if the weather is good & I don't get fed up with the mosquitoes

@Lowerider: My original plan was to go North via Fort Nelson – but Hwy97 is closed in both directions at Mackenzie Junction due to washouts. If conditions change, I'll contact you if you're up for drinks.

Bjorn,
if you're not adverse to taking a ferry part of the way, riding to Port Hardy at the top of the Island then taking the (fancy) ferry to Prince Rupert then heading up the Cassier Hwy to Watson Lake then Alaska would be a nice way to detour.

I'll go on Cassier Hwy but won't take the ferry –*$400 is way too much & outside my budget

Heading North

I will leave tomorrow from Los Angeles, so I'm well behind, but will go as quickly as possible to get to Prudhoe. I read somewhere where there are problems on 97 and that it is closed at some point. ???

Hi,

My home is in Anchorage. If you are traveling through or need a specific question answered or a part sourced out, place to stay please feel free to contact me.
Be aware that August is a 'wetter' month here. Expect some frost while traveling north of the Brooks Range. That can happen any month
Been to Deadhorse twice, and while nice to have done so there are many other destinations within the state that are worthy of a visit.
Did the Arctic Circle run this past June for giggles.

Travel safely and have a GREAT time.

Alaska Trip

I'm also interested in a trip to Alaska. I live in Tampa, Florida and plan to ride to Vancouver, Canada solo. It will take me about 5-6 days to cross the country.

I'm looking for a riding partner that is Northwest of the United States or near Vancouver, Canada that wants to ride to Alaska and back. I would prefer to camp as much as possible instead of staying in a hotel each night.

I'm flexible with my time because I am self-employed. If anyone is interested, let me know.

Highway 97 is open as of today, with what they call "major delays". I gess it'll get gradually better over the next few days. Check drivebc.ca for further info.
