Africa trip End 2011

Hi people,

I'm planning a trip through Africa at the end of 2011. I'm starting early Nov and probably ending it late Dec/early Jan. I was thinking about ending the trip in South Africa, to spend new years in Capetown. :D

The route and the way the bike gets there (either shipping or driving it there from holland) are still very much open to change. Although my main plan, when there won't be a fellow rider to consider, will be to ship the bike to SA and drive through SA-Namibia-Botswana-Zimbabwe-Mozambique-Malawi-Tanzania-Kenya in 8 weeks or so and quickly back to SA. But again that's open to discussion and also depends on which countries will be (relatively) safe at the time.

Selling the bike in SA and flying back is more definite in my current plan.

Anyone interested in joining up and riding :mchappy: ??

Gideon

I doing the same path !! But I start at July 1st and end in cape town at the end of oct' , do you want to bring your trip forward and join me?
I'm riding a drz400

Hi Gideon,
Looks like there are slim pickings for bikers doing the west coast route.

My plan is still to ride from the UK to South Africa down the west coast, obviously taking into account the stability, or lack of, in each country closer to the time.
If this trip flops due to another coup, an election or just general craziness, I will consider heading around the Med and down the east coast.

If you dont go with your "shipping to Cape Town and riding a loop" idea, keep me in mind.

Cheers
SM

Hi Trichelia,
When were you thinking of doing your West Coast run? Any idea yet of proposed route?
CJ.

I would like to bring it forward, but unfortunately at the moment I'm doing research at the Erasmus university and I won't be done till end of August. After that I first have to work for an month or so to finance the trip...

Good luck with your trip though!!

Yeah you seem to be right.

I do like your plan, my original plan was to ride to Africa from Europe as well, but I've only got 2-2.5 months to spend on the trip. And driving the bike back in the middle of the winter in Europe might be 'challenging'...

Maybe it's an idea to contact each other through e-mail and discussing travel plans, ideas, etc?

My mail is gideonvalstar@gmail.com.

(BTW. I do know some french, although it has been some time... :P)

thats a great trip I did it last in a Landrover and rushed it in 3 months as that is all the time I had. My advice if you can take slow and get to see the many beautiful places on the way. I left the vehicle in Walvis in storage and will go back next year for the Southern Africa part

Good luck

Good to hear that it's a nice route. Considering the current situation in most African countries riding with some people is now more important to me though than the route. So I'll have to see how it goes route-wise. But I'll keep it in mind!! Have fun with your next trip!!

Sent you an email..
my plan so far: leave early Oct from Netherlands heading south, taking sightseeing tours in Africa on the way and end up in South Africa about 3 month later. (probably continue to Mozambique for some scuba diving)
I prefer to ride the west route.

Also going to Africa September 19, 2011 - starting in Capetown

I'm headed to Capetown, SA on Sept. 19th. I don't really have a firm itinerary or time span but I am interested in African wildlife, culture and (of course) riding. I'm thinking of heading north to Botswana, Mozambique, Kenya, Tanzania etc (pardon any misspellings). Let me know if anyone on this thread is interested in crossing paths or riding together for a spell.

Hello fellow Africa travelers (I'm starting to get pumped for the trip)!

It seems most of the potentials (Fokke, Trichela) are going north to south is that correct? Is anybody going south to north?

I'm kind of hard-core dirt guy so I'll definitely be looking for out-of-the-way roads and places to check out. Let me know if there is anyone out there anxious for the same.

Keith - to email use my handle @ yahoo.

Hej Keith, you should have mail from Trichelia. We are riding north south, and we do want to go to those out of the way places. We ride a xt600e and a dr-z400. very suitable for off road.
But October is only a couple of month away, how far are you scheduling? And what's ur plan?

Cheers.

I have no fixed dates or times yet but hoping to be in Tanzania around October 2011 for rides either north or south and happy to go with the flow in terms of routes.... either North up to Kenya, or South as suggested ....
