SwedenAfrica

Hello!
We are also planning to go to Africa and the East way. We will start from Sweden in the end of july 2010. Its me and my wife. We want to take it easy and are not in a hurry because today we got clear that my wife has got leave for 13 months! If anyone is going the same way at the same time we could maybe go together some part of the route. Maybe we even can get some good advice for the preparation?!
We will travel with our 4x4 VW bus!!

Hi Paul,

Sorry to hijack the thread but you mentioned shipping to Egypt and that triggered a memory.

In short, you may want to consider whether it is more beneficial to ship into a different country than Egypt. A couple of years back while waiting at the Sudanese embassy in Cairo for a Sundanese visa, I met a family that had shipped their 4x4 from South Africa to Egypt for their drive of a lifetime and they had some horrow stories about how long and how expensive it was to clear their vehicle through customs in Alexandria.

Not sure if that is always the case, but having experienced Egyptian bureacracy firsthand, I can imagine that it isn't the most straighforward process. If you have a lot of time and patience, certainly doable, but unless some of the experienced 4x4'ers can recommend an easier way, I would probably look into a different country to ship into and then transit through Egypt, and that process is relatively straighforward and painless. Hope that helps.

Alternative !

Where would you suggest, perhaps Italy, as I suppose Libya would be out of the question and the there could be Jordan any ideas ?

Watch the rainy seasons

Hey Guys,

No sure what your respective time frames are, but Zambia and Botswana is quite hard to travel after November because of cotton mud and lots of rain.

My wife and I are heading North from South Africa in May, so I'm sure we'll see each other on the way!

Hello,
I and the wife could be in the running, we were looking at leaving UK may be around end of February / March 2010, and going the West coast.
We have a 120 series Land Cruiser.
I was looking at Egypt, but decided the robbing Egyptians with the 800% carnet charges and ferry from Egypt to Sudan, soon put paid to that idea.

traveller1041 9 Sep 2009 12:28

Howdy uk vette

I agree with you totally with the egypt perspective the carnet issue can cost alot with RAC also ferry to sudan and the mugger's in eqypt:funmeterno: what date you off we were thinking along april.

I have done west coast route and I have a friend who run's a overland expedition company in the uk and the only issue of concern is DRC-ANGOLA
visa...But last time i court a frieght ship from point noire CONGO into ANGOLA
as voting in DRC. What I have learn that african politics can change quickly but all problems we get on the road can be sorted out in the end people are always willing to help.

I cant wait to get back into africa i have good friend's and memmories in the dark continent...Also LOT'S OF LOVELY WAYPOINT'S OF CAMPSITE'S ETC.:thumbup1:...hope to here from you are you on the TOYOTA OWNER'S FORUM UK

Howdee, dan & lou,

We were looking to go towards the end of 2009, maybe November, but, i will be later than that now.
Could even stretch as far as April, but that would be pushing it.
We will be relocating to Cape Town, so from mid January, we will pack all the furniture into a container or two, and drive the 120 down.

MMmmm...

As far as I am aware, it is ridiculously difficult to get an Angola Visa. If you can get one, it's only an 8 day transit and that's nothing but making dust across Angola. I'm not sure how long you're planning on traveling for, but perhaps ask Jean Visser and co a few questions on that route and rainy seasons. They completed this year. Ons4 and he is a member here.

You guys should really look into getting carnets from the South African AA. They will give you a carnet on a UK reg vehicle, for a UK national for 200% including Egypt and they will believe any valuation of vehicle that looks official. Friends of mine got a LC 80 valued at about GBP3 000.

If you do this you also have the option to ship to South Africa in container (About GBP1100 to Cape Town) or RORO to Durban, or Port Elizabeth (Around GBP 900) and driving back to the UK. It is easier to get the Angolan visa in South Africa...

Hi. I am currently in the stages of planning a trip to Cape Town. I own a 110 CSW that I've 70% prepped for overlanding. Have a rough route planned through
France
Italy (Ferry to Tunis)
Libya
Eygpt (maybe)
Sudan
Ethiopia
Kenya
Tanzania
Zambia
Botswana
Namibia
RSA
Then ship what ever is left of the landie back home.
This is my first vehicle based expo and basically I need as much info/tips/detailed routes as possible and would love to hear from anyone who is planning the same or similar journey. At the moment the plan is to travel alone (I do have friends honest) so if any one is interested in joining me either in their own vehicle or mine for all or part of the journey let me know. I am very flexible on dates/routes - although I was aiming for March 2010

Hi Dan & Lou

We are thinking of travelling from about the middle of July 2010 at the end of the school year, this is negotiable!! Love your idea of going on the east side, we would particuarly like to see Jordan, the rest is a bonus. We have a Nissan Navara pick up that is prepared ready to go, fitted OME suspension, two inch lift, drawer system for equip, roof rack, plated underneath, winch to front and Engel fridge. We have been to Tunsia and through the Sahara for several days with another group and then to Morroco twice - it is time to spread our wings and we have been considering Africa for the last year or so, but like yourselfs we want to travel with another 4x4 for safety reasons. We are an easy going couple and have enjoyed travelling in groups before. If you are interested we would like to meet up with you to discuss your plans as we would welcome advice for the paperwork side of things. We live on the West coast of the Lake District, (But watch out as Dave is a scouser!!!) How long are long are you thinking of doing the trip for - we thought maybe six months but we are not tied either way.

Regards Dave & Shar
