Across Russia in summer 2008

I thought that I was the only one with itchy feet and plans for an epic motorcycle journey. I found HU and found that there are people doing it every day!! I plan to do UK to Nordcape and across Russia to Valdivostoc in 2008 when I retire (at 57) I've been doing European trips for many years on holidays but fancy a 3 month journey. I've just bought a 1200GS in preparation. (will run it in in Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland Germany and Holland in May.) Is anyone interested in joining me? I guess that probems will be halved with two or three. If not, has anyone advice on the hard bit to the west of Lake Biakal?
Cheers
Paul

Hope that you're trip gets off the ground. Finance will always be a big issue - I reckon my trip will cost about £5K. Oh, and I spotted a mistake on my original post - I meant east and not west of Lake Baikal.
Re troubles and numbers - I'm thinking about dragging a motorcycle across a river or out of a bog !
Cheers

I just put a diposit on 1200 GS Adv. but I think I will have new one by 2008, I am doing ~50K on my 1150 Adv. a year. Been in Poland took 14en hours drive to get there, cost ~ £400.

For how long you intend to go? I will need to take a time off my work.

Email me.

Summer 2007 or 2008 that is the question...

Hey Paul:

I might be interested in joining you across Russia. I am still in the planning stages and am looking to get back on the road in 2007. I have not yet decided if I want to start in Western Europe and work my way East to Vladivostok or begin in Japan, take the ferry over to Vladivostok, and work my way West.

If I decide to start in Western Europe I am definatley in. I will spend 2007 checking out Western Europe and join you for your trek acroos Russia.

Let me know how your plans are going and please drop me an email when you have a moment.

Thanks.

Michael

Hi Schlapp and Mac19406

I haven't checked the posts on the HUBB for some time and was surprised to see any replies. I did have some initial interest but that dried up without serious interest. I'm still on for the trip - no firm plans yet on routes or specific dates. I plan to retire in April 08 so maybe set off a month after that. The rough plan is still to go to Nordkapp and then down through Finland, into Estonia and Latvia before turning left for Russia!! I'd like to go into Mongolia along the way.(Me and two other friends have just come back from a trip to Sweden and the Baltic states). I plan to be away for about three months so may ship the bike back from Japan or come back through Russia depending on how far / how long it's taken. I'm going to the UK HU meeting this month to see what I can learn about preparation and equipment. I've bought the Adventure Motorcycling Handbook of course and that's packed with good stuff.
Hope this is of some use to you guys.
At the time I retire, I'll be 58 and still reasonably fit, enjoy motor cycling and and yes, I am male!!
Look forward to hearing from you guys.
Paul

Please keep me up to date on your plans. It sounds like I am in as a fellow traveler (if you don't mind the company).

Michael,
If you're looking into making the trip in 2007, I'd be interested in joining up. My plan is to ride from London to Oz via Russia/Mongolia, although I expect that I'll have problems with China and have to go Japan to Laos before heading down Indonesia.
Let me know if you're up for 07...
Charles

Paul

I am in the beginning stages of planning a similar trip but starting in China, up thru Mongolia (crossing the Gobi) then west across Russia and Europe. Any probs or wins you have with your planning would be a great assistance to my planning. Currently in central Victoria, Aust.

I have recently retired from the Australian Navy and looking for the next adventure.

Cheers

P.S. In the process of buying a new 1200 Adventure, can't wait.

Paul,
have a good trip allow yourself plenty of time. One of the few roads you'll get to find a kilometer marker with your birth year on. I'm not as old as you, but in this photo I may look it.
