Heat Resistant Money

I've read of others hidding money on their bikes. The problem here is that Australian money is thin plastic - it shrinks if ironed! So hiding that where it may get hot is not a good idea.

So what money (UK, USA, Euro etc) is heat resistant? And is it water resistant too?

I've washed Sterling many times without effect.

Now setting fire to it, is another matter.

Ah, Aussie money! The only 'paper' money you can take surfing! Now THAT'S a national lifestyle statement!

British money is quite tough, I've had tenners go through a colourfast cottons wash several times and still exchanged them for and sandwiches.

Just wrap them in polythene (or a Johnny), add a bit of duct tape and away you go.

Oz money survives the washing machine .. it does not like being ironed afterwards though. Considering how hot it can get in the sun here I'd have though a highter temperature plastic would be required ..

So we have
10 GBP to be both heat and water resistant.


I'd use gold but most people have trouble giving the right change...

They don't survive washing at all, the number of tiles I found a small wadded up vaguely blue bit of paper in my pocket and realised it was a five Euro note. Luckily I've never had one of the big notes (up to 500 euros) on me to wash, that would be a disaster.

They don't respond well to being stuffed in a sweaty back pocket either, that tends to make them fall apart pretty quickly. I suppose it's why so many of them are covered in sticky tape (or durex for our Ozzie readers).

Still the coins seem to survive OK.

Gold. It also resists acids, alkalis and even if it melts holds its' value.
Can only be dissolved by aqua regia (mixed nitric and hydrochloric acids).
Gold coins are available in denominations as small as 1/10 oz. (~US$100).

We have gold coins here too - not in common circulation - teh $300 is aboiut the same size as the $1 coin! Coins don't fold up into small spaces ... would prefer notes.

Ironing??? Our US dollars are shrinking without us touching them!!! Thanks to Mr. Bush and his war. We're going so far in debt that the world is losing confidence in our ability to pay our bills! So the dollar loses value against other currencies.

DAVSATO (and others) please don't put up where stuff hides on the bike .. you're only telling the thieves.

For people who don't know where the hiding places are .. ask. But best is to sit and look at the bike - remove things and sit and look again. TRhey are there - they just take finding. Teh best ones are the ones you find yourself.
