What exactly can or can't you carry onto a plane in your hand luggage now ?
 

This seems to keep changing.. I've just read the OFFICIAL list on the U.K. Governments website..

Now, they say you can carry a lighter, scissors, tweezers, etc etc.

These are all the things that seem to fill the security bins at the scanners in the Airport..

I travel with ONLY hand luggage so I'm really keen on some up to date and official info on this...

I'm planning on travelling in India in January with only hand luggage so I'd like to take the piss as much as possible.... :cool4:

I've always carried a collapsible corkscrew in my bag - got pulled for it because it looked like a detonator but no confiscation in the end.
Also got pulled for having real razor blades, not disposables and confiscated.
I try to remember to leave my little swiss army knife, the one with the scissors, nail file and small blade, at home but it has seen Morocco a few times - the last time via Spain.

When picking up the car, with the essential battery connector 13 spanner and leatherman the only thing to be carried, the helpful checkin guy confiscated it, put it in his pocket and handed it back to me as I left the aircraft. Legend.

On another flight it took a bit of explaining, but eventually they allowed my tow strap and shackles.

It's often a matter of luck.

i had two cable locks confiscated from my hand luggage at Sofia customs (my bag was at max weight mainly due to my crosser boots). Andy

Have you had any issues by traveling with full riding suit and helmet (helmet not in the head...)?

I'd worn Alpinestars Tech 10 boots onto flights. I don't think you can get bigger and more offensive boots.

I've only once been asked about them and I just said they were ankle support boots. I wasn't lying was I :innocent:

I've carried a helmet as hand luggage a few times with no issues. Although on budget airlines they are getting VERY VERY strict about ONE piece of hand luggage. So if you already have small rucksack, they might make you stow the helmet in the hold. I've never tried wearing one on the plane though lol.

When leaving from Kathmandu airport with my tankbag as hand luggage the security guard on the X-ray machine pointed out that I had a pair of scissors in it which I had forgotten about, he waved his finger at me then let me proceed without confiscating them.

I had no problem on sleezy jet to Marakech.

I figured that even if I lost my bags, it wouldn't ruin my trip as I had all the really important stuff on me. Bit of a pain taking MX boots off so they could go through the X-ray though.

You're making this unecessarily difficult. Just check in a bag to carry in the hold with all items that could potentially be confiscated. Waiting for a bag at the carousel only takes 10 minutes and it rules out any chance of that expensive leatherman/swiss army knife/favourite tool etc etc being confiscated.

You can ditch the bag (or give it to someone) when done using it.

I prefer travelling light. I hate dragging suitcases or large rucksacks around. If I check a bag, i'll only be tempted to fill it.

I've missed too many connecting flights, transfers etc by lost luggage.

It's really nice having your whole life in a 30L Rucksac.

I like that I can take a dry cell bike battery on a plane :) It also seems that a zippo lighter and blades under 6cm are too. I guess that includes scissors and pen knifes too. Cool :thumbup1:
