travelling with a dog in the sidecar round the world
 

now that my life has changed insofar that I am the happy compagnion of "Babelman" a mid-sized sheepdog and still want to continue to travel , I have decided to use an Ural+sidecar for this.
Is there anybody out there who has knowledge where to get the necessary informations on paperwork, veterinarian documentations or - still better- own experiences crossing specific borders with a motorcycle + a pet? I can only hope that Iam not the only one who is crazy enough to to consider this project.

A few months ago I saw a fellow on the TV news who was riding around the world on a _bicycle_ with his pet dog. He kept the dog in one of the panniers on the bike - and this was not some wimpy little rat dog but some kind of a terrier or spaniel!
They didn't go into details as to the paperwork but he'd been all through SE Asia and Australia at this point and was just then starting to ride through the Americas.

Personally I would recommend finding a trusted friend or family member to care for your pet while you are on the road as I would think the various paperwork would be a tremendous burden, both financially and stress-wise.

hey my german shepard also wants to come on my planned year lap around south am beginnin sept2002. i was looking at those one wheeled trailers built here in the states-similar looking to the bicycle ones but would it work? maybe the latin chicks would be scared of my dog? if he rode in a trailer i'd have to get a bike bigger than my KLR?

I've traveled all over with my dog. Most recently I've been traveling in Nepal and India with Kipper, a Jack Russell Terrior. We have an Enfield 350 cc. I had a special cushion made that i strap over the tank. There is a rain/wind flap that I can deploy if weather gets to be an issue.

We've been traveling for 7/8 months now, no problems. I've only been refused entry into one restaurant. Never been refused a hotel room.

All I needed was an International Health Certificate and a stamp from the USDA. It took 1 and half days. No one checked for her papers in the USA, Germany, India or Nepal airports! We've crossed into Nepal 1x, India 3x, Pakistan 1x and never had to show papers.

I do make sure if we have an important day that she's all gussied up, collar and address and rabies tags in place...

I recommend you get a retractable leash, I think those are safest for motorcycles. This was if you have a wreck his/her neck won't snap, there will be plenty of give but you can real the pooch in safely from traffic. I have mine losely attached to the crash bar. In India it's not a matter of IF you will wreck, it's a matter of HOW many times. I'm really glad I had the retractable leash because I could always maintain control of her safely. She by the way never got hurt and was always excited to jump back on. I am the one that has the sore body parts.

I don't regret bringing her at all. People love to meet her and so many more doors and opportunities have opened up to us because of her. She also is a great companion and guard dog.
