There you go Ted
.... bears are better climbers than we, swim and run faster too...... So, the best thing to do is ensure that you can climb/run and swim faster than the (soon to be x ) friend you are going with and you'll be fine! ![]() Re: pepper spray and bells: I asked a Canadian friend of mine and the picture is her answer! She also sent me a small map that could be useful- detail not too great but informative.....

Ted,
That sounds very cool! I did a canoe trip in Finland a while ago (just 6 days) and it remains one of the best, most carefree trips of my life. Definitely take a fishing rod! And booze. We had quite a lot of booze. My bro carries bear spray for black bears in Japan. Probably a psychological crutch as much as anything but that can be really worth having when you are on your own in the backcountry. A mate of mine used to go on exploratory trips hauling sledges on skis in Greenland. One year the Danish Govt. decided they would not issue them with a gun permit. So my mate and his partner found themselves in polar bear country armed with nothing more deadly than ice axes! Anyway - if you want to watch an amazing and very scary documentary about bears watch the Werner Herzog classic 'Grizzly Man'. The moral seems to be - Don't be near Grizzlys when the Grizzlys are hungry! (From memory this is the end of the summer) Seriously - its an awesome film and shows that grizzlys are not necessarily a danger to humans. You just have to treat them with respect. (No cuddling) ![]() Enjoy, very jealous! Matt
