Thanks guys... It's great to hear from you folks up there who've done it..

The bear issue has been put to rest... Now I'm just scared of banjos and possible shark attacks.

Does pepper spray work on red necks ?? lol

Wink

There you go Ted
.... bears are better climbers than we, swim and run faster too......
So, the best thing to do is ensure that you can climb/run and swim faster than the (soon to be x ) friend you are going with and you'll be fine!
Re: pepper spray and bells: I asked a Canadian friend of mine and the picture is her answer!

She also sent me a small map that could be useful- detail not too great but informative.....

Ted,

That sounds very cool! I did a canoe trip in Finland a while ago (just 6 days) and it remains one of the best, most carefree trips of my life. Definitely take a fishing rod! And booze. We had quite a lot of booze.

My bro carries bear spray for black bears in Japan. Probably a psychological crutch as much as anything but that can be really worth having when you are on your own in the backcountry.

A mate of mine used to go on exploratory trips hauling sledges on skis in Greenland. One year the Danish Govt. decided they would not issue them with a gun permit. So my mate and his partner found themselves in polar bear country armed with nothing more deadly than ice axes!

Anyway - if you want to watch an amazing and very scary documentary about bears watch the Werner Herzog classic 'Grizzly Man'. The moral seems to be - Don't be near Grizzlys when the Grizzlys are hungry! (From memory this is the end of the summer) Seriously - its an awesome film and shows that grizzlys are not necessarily a danger to humans. You just have to treat them with respect. (No cuddling)

Enjoy, very jealous!

Matt

When reading my post imagine me sitting behind a frothing pint of ale, smiling and offering you a bag of peanuts. This is the sentiment in which my post is made. Please accept it as such!
