Travel/Medical Insurance for people riding bikes over 350cc
 

Hi all

Does anyone know where to get travel/medical insurance if I'm riding a bike over 350cc? Most regular policies don't cover you over 125cc?

Motorcycling is considered a Grade 1 Activity under the policy's Ts&Cs, so no additional charge.

Defintition: 'Motorcycling on public roads (no racing) safety helmet to be worn and must possess a licence allowing You to ride an equivalent motorcycle in the UK'

Note - No engine cc restriction.

Hi, the 1stoptravelinsurance.co.uk is no good for most HUBB users, as it only covers motorcycling PROVIDING that the activity is on an incidental basis!!!

I think the insurance company will quickly work out that you are not riding incidentally if you take your bike around the world!

We also need to extend our travel insurance soon, so any suggestion for good companies are appreciated!

You're right although most policies count motorcycling as a grade 1 activity the small print normally limits the cc below what you'd want for long distance travelling. That's what I found anyway. I'm about to go round Europe and Russia and have bought the Voyager Lite insurance with Navigator Travel Insurance.
They cover any cc bike without prices getting expensive for road travel (this counts as travelling on any road which would be considered a raod in that country, even if the gravel track you are talking about would definately class as off road in England). It suits me because they'll cover my volunteer work too.
Prices depend on length of time etc but worth having a look at.

Good point, which is confirmed in the policy wording:

"You are covered [for] Emergency Medical Expenses and [for] Personal Accident sections for the following activities automatically, provided that the activity is on an Incidental basis You do not need to contact 1 Stop Travel Insurance."

"Definition of Incidental
-means happening on a casual or occasional basis."

HOWEVER, I've just phoned 1Stop Travel Insurance - spoke to Emma - who confirmed that I will be covered even though I'll be riding on more than an 'Incidental' basis, i.e from Bali Indonesia to Kuala Lumpur over a two-month period.

This is important to me as my next trip starts in a couple of months time, in mid-May. I arranged my policy last Sunday [March-04], so there's still time for me to cancel under the 'cooling off' rules if there's no cover.

Emma was quite adamant that I am indeed covered. I have asked her to put this in wrting to me, which she is quite happy to do .. and doing it straightaway in fact.

I'll let you know how it goes.

Polcy schedule has been amended with the following endorsement wording:

Cust called querying Motorcycling cover adv covered as standard Grade 1 activities. Can use this while abroad as its his main transport and not on an incidental basis."

As a comparison, mountaineering and bob sleighing are both level 4 and cycle riding is as hazardous as riding a motorcycle.

I've got an annual policy with the AA and have confirmed that I am covered whilst on motorcycle touring holidays because they also quote "incidental" use in their terms.

Does the AA policy have a trip length limit? A lot of them have a standard 90 day limit per trip

I've had a very good response from the AA before - I had a climbing accident but my mum had got out a standard holiday insurance policy, they stumped up over 30,000 quid for helicopters, plane tickets etc

Thanks everyone for your help. I've also spotted that it's worth reading thr small print in your own policy. Mine says i can;t ride anything over 125 unless i have a full licence and no convictions. Obviously designed for car drivers who ride a bike on hols without having taken their test in the UK
