Transporting my bike and wife to the USA

Hi all,

I'm new to the site so be gentle with me. I would like to transport my BMW R1200RT ( plus my wife and myself) to the USA for a long road trip and to visit family. Has anyone done this and, if so, what did it cost and how easy was it, etc.?

You questions will be very difficult to answer unless you say, for example, where you are coming from, when, for how long.

You can probably answer it yourself without hoping for gentle responses. Do a search, and pour through hundreds of relevant posts. The search engine on this site continues to suck (for no apparent reason, except that it always has). Use the following format with Google: "site:horizonsunlimited.com word word word" with no quotes and the appropriate words entered.

Hope that's helpful.

Mark

Sifting through little bits, i presume you are a UK citizen probably living in Germany ?? Put my crystal ball away for a moment.

There is a Ro-Ro ship the leaves a few ports in Europe and visits ports in USA and Canada .. Wallenius Wilhelmsen . Wallenius Wilhelmsen Logistics - worldwide ocean transport, inland services, supply chain solutions, terminal services

We used them last year everything went as they said and it was around £700 and then plus port fees etc around another £100. We delivered the bike to Southampton Docks signed some papers left the keys in and walked away. We collected the bikes some 17 days later in Baltimore .

Then you just arrange a flight for when you want .

Transporting bike to the USA

If you are only traveling through the States have you considered buying locally? KLR's are going quite cheap I believe. The cost of shipping out to the States and then back to Europe could be the majority of the price of buying out there, and will save the hassles too. We have shipped the bike 4 times on this trip, not an easy or cheap process. If you have family there then shouldn't be a problem leaving it with them to sell when you return.

I do know where you are so I do not knoe who to point you to for shipping. Think $1000 to $2000 in shipping

But people fly here all the time and some ship there bike. You call a shiping company and ask how much and how they want it and where. You do all that pay them and ship the bike. You want know the bike shipped before you fly off.

You may want to look at other post as there have been 4 or so asking this this year. Not being nasty but more info is best.

As has been posted you want to buy or rent a bike in the USA as it may well save you time and problems.
