Tire Through Africa
So I am travelling two up through Africa on a 1150GS and was planning on carrying a spare set of tires but I am thinking of ways to shed weight. So what is your peoples advice on carrying tyres!!!! Do I need to???? Will I be able to find tyres in major cities????

where do you want to go in Africa ?

You can get Mich Deserts and Pirellis at Toni's KTM shop in Lome, Togo. Also Metzeler Saharas at a KTM shop in Karen, Nairobi (can't remember the name...)
Otherwise (going from Morocco to Cape T via Ghana and Ethiopia) decent tyres are a bit thin on the ground. I've seen loads of people with crappy Thai tyres. I put on Deserts in Gibraltar, they lasted to Togo, got new ones there, put on a new front Metz Sahara in Nairobi which is fine, and there's still a bit of wear left in the rear Desert, and I'm in Malawi... Unless things have changed you will have problems finding 17’ in Nairobi and think twice before you put on a crap-tire on a 1150 when you ride two up.
If you don’t find anything good you can always get someone shipped in, bring your carnet to the post-office to avoid taxes… It worked for me.. |
