snake signs

My wife would like to know if anyone knows exactly what the snake crossing signs in Nicaragua mean. Herd of snakes, beware? Or just one big bad one?

No slippery road sign. Can snakes crossing possibly be common enough to warrant signs in a poor country that lacks signs for imprtant info?

If you run over a snake, and I have a few times, it flips round and tries to bite you, snake teeth are quite sharp and will rip through training shoes but probably not good boots. Some snakes have good road sense and when they feel the vibrations on the road they stop and stand to strike, well Golden Cobras do anyway, luckily I managed to miss that one though it did take up quite a bit of road.
