outstaying 3 months visa in australia
 

We are on a three month visa in australia but the car took longer to arrive than i expected..when I went to ask for extension of 6 weeks they told me it would cost A$205 per person plus the cost of an xray so thats about A$600. what would happen if we simply did not renew it.

if i turn up at the airport when the timecomes to leave what can they do??

We had an American friend who did that in about 2002/3 (so not exactly up to date info I know and she overstayed from the Olympics in 2000), she was detained and missed her flight (she had to buy new ticket), her passport was stamped with not to enter Australia for 5 years. I think she wanted to fly to NZ and the immigration dept. would only allow her to fly to the USA.

She's had to try and explain the stamp to every immigration officer in NZ, Canada and USA since - there must be some fraternal arrangement between immigration officers about making overstayers entry hard!!

She's tried at least once to get an ETA and the flag on her name has stopped her.

In the worst case you are officially deported and your government foots the bill - usually your passport is held by your government until you've settled the bill. Deportation is always back to your own country.

The answer is just don't do it. If you overstay you are likely to be officially deported when you want to leave. If this happens, you will have great difficulty returning to Australia at any time in the future. I know a person who innocently overstayed and now she cannot return for a holiday no matter how short the time.

Cant you take a break to NZ and renew it there, or get another tourist visa for a month or so? At last count it was a different country so you leave Oz. If you overstay you wont get back in....its part of Australia's commitment to ensure nasty people who dont respect our over-indulgent law makers as gods never return should they ever have been lucky eough to get in in the first place. Like the new english langauge test for immigrants.....also known as the "no chance for grannies" clause.

Now where is that Girt again? Oh by the sea...

I don't generally get involved in political aspects on sites like this as I really don't consider it necessary unless as part of looking at visiting somewhere, which your post was initially addressing, and that's appropriate.
I joined HU because of my love of bikes and travel, and if I want to make political or discouraging statements I'll go to a more appropriate forum.
Yes, we do have our faults here, but if we are as bad as you're potraying, perhaps you should consider whether you really want to be here yourself Alec. Maybe try another country...say Somalia.

Ah Clancy, when I live in an objective world, with an objective history, where no one is any different to any other and everyone expresses exactly the same view on exactly the same issues I will endeavour to restrcit myself.

If you have travelled, you may have noticed that the politics of the countries you travelled through affected your experience in them, the ironies, contradictions and absurdities, Iran and its Islamic laws, Turkmenistan and its now passed on psycho Turkmenbashi naming months after family members, Russia and its red tape not to mention blacked-out law breaking limmoes etc etc

Australia is no differrent and to suggest that critism of the governments immigration policies, as part of a response to a query on immigration/ visa issues and someones intention to break those laws, means I should move to another country is a pretty unimpressive response.

I would have probably responded by pointing out the large number of refugees that do get residency while acknowledging the tradgedy of the SEIVX. But I am not you.

Pull your head out of the sand Clancy and look at things in their context, I suspect you need to do a little bit more travelling, terribly sorry if this information on the SEIVX upest your view of our country..our polies didn't know about the AWB stuff either! (sic) Come to the Tintaldra Horizons Meeting and we can continue this with beer!

I am still impressed that a response took five days!

thanks for the advice everyone..in the end decided not to bother and left before my visa expired..being slapped on the wrist by an immigration officer didnt phase me but having obeyed laws (no matter how pointless)all through the trip didnt want to start in Australia.

i loved australia but found the beaurocracy as bad as any African country, but at least they didnt want bribes!!!
