Nairobi Dealership, Buying an XT in UK or France

Three Quick Questions:

1) In July 2001 I will be shooting a short documentary film about a refugee (Obang Okello) from Ethiopia. Myself and four others plan to fly into Nairobi and buy/rent motorcycles for 1-2 months so we can retrace his Obang’s route in reverse, from a refugee camp in Kenya, to his home in Gambella Ethiopia. We would consider travelling by truck or flying to each of the significant locations in Obang’s story, but would rather experience the route from the more exposed perspective offered astride bikes. I have been researching places to buy/rent motorcycles in Nairobi, and so far have come up empty handed. Does anyone know of a BMW/Honda/Yamaha dealership in the city or a place to rent quality bikes? Also, are there any tour companies that would be willing to outfit and lead a trip from Kenya into Ethiopia? Finally, if we do end up buying bikes in Kenya, can we sell them in Ethiopia (Addis Abeba), or will we have to ship them back to Nairobi?

2) In the fall of 2001 I will be studying abroad in London and plan on traveling in Europe and West Africa after my courses let out in mid-December. I am looking to buy a used XT600 or similar bike (I currently own a XT350) for traveling, and am curious where I can get the best deal. I’ve heard France has lots of XT’s, but the UK might be more convenient. What should I expect to pay (mid to late 90’s model), and are there pitfalls I should be aware of as an American buying a vehicle in another country (title, insurance, carnet, etc.)

3) Any suggestions for a good book to research the culture and history of the Paris-Dakar rally?

Thanks in advance for the advice. If anyone is interested in accompanying us on either of the trips feel free to contact me for more info.

Bill
