This didn't directly happen to me, but I witnessed it.

Me and a friend were riding in west mongolia, when we inevitably came across a smallish river crossing.

It was my turn to see if how deep the water was, so in I plunge with boots off and trousers rolled up, out in the middle of no-where. Some white guy having a splash on his foreign bike.

All of a sudden I'm lolling around in the water when this old skool 2-stroke russian motorbike and sidecar rolls up to the water's edge, with steve mcqueen mongolian riding it with his wife and kid in the sidecar.

He shoots me this look that said "hey sunshine, this is mongolia, we don't worry about water depth" which made me feel a right pillock, and he ploughs right on in.

As he got half way in he flooded the bike and all family members had to bail as it sank.

I was working at a motorcycle shop in Cape Town in the 80's. Had just serviced an xt500 and taken it for a ride. There was a nice little lip on the pavement outside the entrance to the workshop which was perfect for popping a wheelie over so you could make a one wheeled entrance to the workshop looking cool!
Only while I was out test riding, the floor had been mopped just inside the entrance, in I come, drop the front wheel onto the wet shiney floor and it just slides out from under me.Bike gracefully glides across workshop on it's side towards a row of 8 newly assembled bikes waiting to go in the showroom.Half a dozen people watched in seemingly slow motion as xt hit first bike that toppled over and in a glorious domino effect took out all the others.Broken levers, mirrors, torn seats, smashed indicators, dented tanks...boy was I popular!

After enjoying the popularity of being a motorcycle traveller for couple of days in Buhara ....i was to leave ...

I woke up, got out ...and there .. 10-15 kids waiting ... they were waiting for a impressive take off from Superman and i felt like giving the audience what they wanted ... ( it had nothing to do with the very very very beatiful girl in the reception)

I started the bike .. waited for warm up ... put on helmet&gloves with the arrogancy of a F-16 pilot .......time to take the seat ...

I make the move ... weighted the machine to my right side ...oppps ... too much .... and ...BAAM! ... I fell directly to the right side, taking the bike too ... very impressive ...

I lifted the bike in 5 seconds ...only to drop it to the otherside .... very very impressive ..

I swear i dont recall the following minutes .... i was around 50-60 km.s away from Buhara, when my senses came back ...

OK I'll admit it

The sun came out yesterday so I decided to see if I could actually get my gear in my panniers and got it all out. Then I thought hey, why don't I take some of those look at me rugged camper with bike photos for the old Facebook thingy. So I pitch the tent, get the pots and pans out stove and all of the gear.

A bit of fiddling round and I've got the shot composed, camera's set and I take some shots. Then I thought well i'll go for a bit of a ride the bike's too clean lets get it muddy, so because I knew I didn't have much petrol I thought I'd fill it up from the can I use for the mower. All good so far.

Of I go to get the can and then I hear the ominous sound of bike slowly falling as side stand sinks into ground. Oh God I think there it goes. OH GOD I think the petrol cap.

Result, bike on its side on the tent, and the fuel cap which I'd taken off is letting what remains of the petrol run out.

So if anyone knows how to get petrol out of a tent and sleeping bag and sundry camp bits and pieces, let me know.

You could try a match

My most memorable moment which I try to forget was in my youth out 'cruising' on my Puch Maxi I spotted an old fella up ahead on a honda step through moped. driving very slowly . I wound the little puch wide open (no exhauist baffles fitted back then !) and screamed after him intent on overtaling. As I approached he slowed still urther and I shot past with a big grin thinking ' I had him !!! ' .... only to see the road diappear 90 degrees left ..... I shot through the hedge , over the grass and lanede briskly in a field of cows who looked up at my crumpled mass without stopping chewing their cud for a moment..... :oops2:

Second most memorable was on a recent car ferry crossing between Zeebrugge and Hull - I was handed some ropes by the deck hand to tie my bike down, I dutifully used all my faculties of recall to remember those knots I had learned in the boy scouts all those years back. Several lengths of rope later and I was happy that my bike was secure. Next morning upon arriving back on the car deck I was pleased to see my bike standing firm after the night crossing. I untied it and mounted and rode off. Upon going down the ramp all was well until I applied the back brake which on 2nd touch gave way to nothing - :eek3: - no back brake at all and a line of cars and a greasy car deck in front of me.... I managed to hold it upright and get off the boat and stopped on terra firma only to find that in my superb tieing down of the niight before I had only tied the rear brake line securely against the frame and severed it - brake fluid everywhere :stupid:
