MCN Paper Adventure Mag

Hi just found out that MCN are doing a Artical about Adventure Riding http://www.motorcyclenews.com/upload.../adventure.jpg

Tony P 18 Aug 2011 15:50

It's an extra magazine - an Adventure Special. Due on the 24th, I believe.

Contains something on the BAM road.
Not sure if Thingy is doing it, though!

chris 18 Aug 2011 18:49

I'm sure it'll be to their usual high editorial standard (cough, splutter, fell off my chair, my dog's been abducted by an alien, this weed tastes good :helpsmilie:I don't have a dog)

It means that if you own a KTM990 your insurance is going up after September.

FFS We really need to hope that MCN keep away from adventure motorcycling, I remember a few years back when 'they' loved the TT, then an unfortunate road racing accident in 2005 involving the deaths of a rider and Marshal forced, at the time a complete U turn, they slagged off race Marshals and even had a reporter sign on as a Marshal so they could have a 'big scoop' in what they considered was poorly run Marshalling.

Though and behold a few years later, Their editor/head knob Marc Potter decided he wanted to take part in a Ducati TT parade lap.

MCN will probably try at first to make adventure biking sound romantic, or even glamorous until there is an 'incident' of either a 'rider down' or kidnapped', then watch how they report it.

MCN along with the SUN newspaper have 2 things in common; both love sensationalism and neither are fit to wipe your @rse.

I have tried both of these publications and now have hemroids, could there be a connection?

KTMANDY 19 Aug 2011 14:57

I am sure the MCN suplement will be full of useful information and not just a vehicle for extra targeted adverts!

Not directly. It's tipping down, you pick up said ready to use fish and chip wrapper, scan through, realise it's full of ****, decide the rain isn't that bad and go use a tank of petrol. You need to MCN proof your seat, buy a sheep skin or something.

Still, If *touringted* starts writing for MCN we may see a picture of Ted NOT wearing an Argentinian football shirt!
:nono:

Hi Javier, I'll try to get a copy for you if I can persuade a younger person to go into the shop for me and you promise not blame me for the content. Hasta luego y ride safe.

Good stuff for the price.

I've just read through most of it.

Ignoring the mentions/reports/photos of our own ride, I think it is quite a worthwhile read for all of us - whether our aims be as "Starbucks lap-top GSA/TT adventurers" or actual "go out there, give it a try, get dirty, whatever" riders of anything with just about 2 wheels.

I would rate it's content potentially more inspiring, useful and instructive than any single edition so far of the glossy bi-monthly we are reminded about here and costs about double, without MCN thrown in. And the glossy has many more pages of advertising (paid for, I presume).

Apart from agreeing with almost everything I read, I learned a thing or two too, and the reasons for something explained for the first time sufficiently for my understanding.

Good stuff.

What we don't know is, will there be a follow up edition not too far into the future?
Personally, I hope so.

Endurodude 25 Aug 2011 15:44

I agree that I hope there's more to come, and have emailed MCN to say as much (it might have no baring, but you never know . . .)

As for the suppliment being more informative than the bi-monthly offering, I would have to disagree with that. I would say the other way around. I have a lot of time for ADV spec and David Lomax (who is quite an inspiring speaker), but the suppliment did seem a little like the whole thing was being sponsored by TT / ADV spec. "Look, we've done this . . . and here's where you can buy our gear!". Having said that, the whole of MCN is like that, really, so I shouldn't have been surprised!

Having said all of that, anything that promotes Motorcycle travel, however adventurous you might want to make it, is good in my opinion.

MCN - this week only?

One or two recent posts in this thread prompted me to spend money on the MCN, for this week only, and this supplement is better than the usual stuff from them (in the past they have published some purile stuff about bikes that are outside their normal range of experience. If it doesn't do 0-60 in a micro second then it ain't really worth it).

So, this supplement is a decent read IMO and, yes, it does read like an advertisement at times, but as much for horizonsunlimited as in any other direction. There is even credit to Grant J near the front for some of the photos, and this forum gets a mention along the way.
In fact, the reason it is a better read than the usual stuff from MCN is because it is not written by their journalists!! bier with due credit given to the authors of the articles including some who contribute to this forum.

As for whether MCN continue to publish simiilarly, I doubt it somehow. They have published a few glossy colour supplements in the past and I have no doubt they will continue in the future, but the themes will vary.

I also purchased said mag and supplement a few hours ago (never purchased it before). I even walked about half a mile around my local town before I found a copy in the 4th newsagent's (the 1st three were sold out...) I went in. I don't regret paying the £1.99.

In most places it's well written (maybe because a lot of non-MCN journos did the writing?) and gives a balance view on things (not just aimed at Starbucks types, but also on ways to do trips on a budget/little bike). As mentioned above, it also seemed to me to be heavily endorsed by T/T and A/S. But if they supply (quite a few of) the words and tour (e.g the Morocco trip), they deserve their pound of flesh, I suppose.

HU got lots of coverage, which is good.

Now, I need to find my dog :stupid:

I hope I didn't sound negative with the TT / ADV spec comment - I have various bits of both on my bike (as well as others)!

Anything that gets others interested in what we love to do can only be a good thing.

I wonder how many people unfamiliar with the HUBB will come for a visit? Hopefully loads! :thumbup1:

Off to buy the Morocco DVD at ADV spec (advertising does work!) . . . :innocent:
