Joint motorcycle ownership between Resident/Foreigner
My dilemma!
I intend to purchase a Honda 250 motorcycle privately through Chileauto.cl in Valdivia, Chile. I have been offered assistance in buying the bike from a (resident of Chile) who under the circumstances I should have complete trust in, after all he is sort of “family” by marriage ! He’s offered to buy the bike on my behalf although the title would be in his name, undertake the necessary paperwork and provide authorization to temporarily leave the country with the bike. I have no doubt the offer is genuine and in good faith however sadly I would probably not even hand ownership over to my own mother, let alone someone I do not yet know very well. As a compromise and to avoid any insult is there any benefit in at least having both our names on the ownership papers. I am putting up all the cash. Or should I just proceed with buying the bike in my name and getting the appropriate paperwork as has been well documented on the Hubb for 'Buying in Chile'. I will also be looking to sell the bike privately in 5 months before returning home to Australia. If anyone has had experience with joint ownership between a foreigner and local resident (particularly in Chile) I would be most appreciative. |

It's not that difficult for foreigners to buy a motorcycle in Chile in their own name. Here are a couple of threads to help you:
http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/hub...santiago-45637 http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/hub...le-chile-45175 You said you will have the bike for 5 months, so I would just wait until you are actually in Chile, get your "in law" to assist with paper work, etc. I suspect that once you were done with the bike, your in-law was hoping for you to sell him the bike for a song, so that option is still open to you.

Thanks Bruce, your advice has reinforced my thoughts exactly. Have read through those previous threads and have made a copy in both English and Spanish so all should be plain sailing hopefully !
