Jobs............

Hi there, new to this site.....this is my first post! Might be a stupid question as I'm completely new to all this ( My only adventures have been round the UK so far....... but that will change!), But what do most of you do for jobs when you're not traveling? Do most people just get any job they can just to save up for the next trip? Or do you all have careers you drop back into? Its one of the main things thats bothering me, as daft as it seems.
Happy travels!
Tim.

Tim,
I am a teacher in the US. While spending my day with 23 eight to nine year olds may not seem like a good career choice, I get two weeks at Christmas, one week in the spring and two months in the summer to travel. Every August I return to work and begin the countdown to the next trip. AUGUST!!! That's in only three weeks! Bye, I'm off to Canada!:mchappy:

I work in construction. Winter is a good time to hit the road.
I have my own company now so I just stop taking on work a few months before I leave. Before I had the company I just gave notice and didnt burn any bridges!
I know too many people who let the worry of work prevent them from travelling, and regret it.

Be a temp

I spent years gaining a professional qualification and climbing the career ladder before realising it wasn't how I wanted to be defined. After being made redundant I spent a few months just taking temp jobs while I decided what I wanted to do, before realising I had started doing it. I get jobs that last anything from three months to 18 months (I know others who have even had 2 year contracts), and every job is different. At the end of each I am a free agent again. I can either go travelling, or look for another job if I'm poor. As a full time temp no one complains how many jobs are on my CV. At the moment all I do is work and be a supportive father because my daughters are at an important stage in their lives, but when they emerge I have a long tour planned.

Having a professional qualification I get to call myself a contractor or an interim manager, but the truth is that I'm a temp! It works for me, but think hard because many people find it insecure. I believe (and it has been true for me) that if you have something to bring to the party, which may be as simple as a willingness to get stuck in and do the job in hand, you will find work. You will need flexibility; you can take time off when your job ends, but if you were planning to go to Nordkapp and your present job finishes in February, you may want a plan B.

Working in education gives regular holidays. Just as well because otherwise it would be unbearable.
